I have a baby in the nestbox that is a mutation I have never had before. I am thinking fallow, but I do not have any fallows nor have I ever seen one in real life. Any one know if this is a fallow baby? The dad is Spike- he is a whiteface heavy pied and mom is Speckles- she is a whiteface cinnamon pearl. I am unsure of the splits of the parents but they had a clutch of 4 babies earlier in the spring and they were whiteface heavy pieds and whiteface pearl pieds, so I would say dad must be split to pearl and mom must be split to pied.
In this clutch they have three, two are Whiteface heavy pieds and then there is this little one with the brightest pink eyes:

What a nice surprise!!!!

If it was fallow the eyes would be pinker, and the color a lighter and warmer tone. What you have is a WF recessive silver split pied.

Both parents would be split/carrying the gene for this to occur...Congratulations :)

Do you have any background on what the parent birds parents were?

I don't know much about fallow but the bright red eyes point in that direction. Cinnamon chicks can have red-looking eyes at birth but they're supposed to darken after a few days.

If you're getting pied chicks then your hen must be split pied. Is it possible that the father is split cinnamon on his other X? Because then you could get these results:

Mother:Whiteface Cinnamon Pearl Split To Pied
Father:Pied Whiteface Split To {X1: Pearl} {X2: Cinnamon}

male offspring:
25% Pied Whiteface Pearl Split To {X2: Cinnamon}
25% Pied Whiteface Cinnamon Split To {X2: Pearl}
25% Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied {X2: Cinnamon}
25% Whiteface Cinnamon Split To Pied {X2: Pearl}

female offspring:
25% Pied Whiteface Pearl
25% Pied Whiteface Cinnamon
25% Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
25% Whiteface Cinnamon Split To Pied

I bought the parents from a lady that didn't know much about them. She did tell me that every once in awhile they had a w/f lutino, which is what i was so sure this was going to be. I could tell it had pink eyes as soon as it hatched so I was convinced I was getting my white baby. Then when it started to feather out, it was a brown color. I have no idea where this color came from.

Srtiels: do you have any pictures of a WF recessive silver split pied? I am very interested to see what they look like as adults. Thanks so much!!:D

Thank you Srtiels for the beautiful pictures.
Oh, they are sooo pretty! I wish I knew more about the different mutations. Do the WF Recessive Silvers always have red eyes? I was so sure I had a WF Lutino, but this is so beautiful too! This will be so much fun watching this little one grow up.
Is this a sex linked mutation so I would know what sex it is? Thanks for the great info!!:)

Yes, RS (recessive silvers) always have the reddish-pink eyes. And if you look at my Avatar pix...that is a WF Fallow baby which has brighter pink eyes...just a few shades lighter than the RS.

RS is not sex-linked, It is a recessive gene and both parents must carry the gene to produce visuals. And your baby can be either sex. Since you have said that you have gotten heavy pieds in the past...were those males? Most times the heavier pieds tend to be males and the not so heavy pieds females.

If your baby has no solid white wing flight feathers or a solid white (no barring) tail feather, then it is also split to pied, which it looks like with the white crest and white on it's head.

It will be a beauty once completely feathered out.

Yes, the heavy pieds are males as far as I can tell as they have found their voices. I love it when the little males learn to whistle and how hard they practice to get it right ;)

Your avatar picture is beautiful, I can see the difference, it is actually remarkable. Your little one is a lot lighter and the eyes are lighter pink too. They say you learn something new everyday, well today is my day! Thank You.

Yes...I have a bunch of little males that are in the sqweeky stage trying to learn to whistle. They try so hard...LOL

Wow what a surprise! I beautiful one indeed. I am jealous for I really have never seen a silver in "real" life. It is going to be such a beautiful bird!
