I walked into the birds room last night to give them their nightly water and he was on the bottom of the cage at first I thought he was stuck or something. I picked him up - with out any fighting or biting - That threw up all the red flags then i realized he was light weight and I got another cage and put him in , and got some dishes and realized he was trying to walk but couldn't even stand up
I do believe he some how broke a leg or both legs Or his back HOW I do not know or maybe a stroke?
He was only a year and half old, He is the 1st BABY born to me When we started breeding He was born January 14 2008
but 3 days ago our female conure was acting the same way - now granted she is missing all the toes on one foot(she came to me like that) but she was way off balance She normally doesn't have issues, running, walking, climbing perching So I took both of them out of the birds room put them in a different cage in my daughters room and she is getting much better she's almost back to normal She is perching fine again and the poor girl is having one heck of a molt which I know isn't helping her or her sprit any.
I'm waiting on a few people to get back a hold of me the only vet we have is not avian but sees birds I called to see how much a necropsy would be and they said between $160-165 I know they ship them off to Purdue University here in Indiana because I called in 2007 asking about it and they told me then they don't do it in the office they ship them to Purdue
SO I contacted Purdue and waiting on a response back, I'd much rather just take My baby gizmo THERE myself and leave out the vet (the vet is not very good any way its the same one who told me to leave his mother in the nest box for 10 days when I thought she was egg bound - thankfully it was a tumor and NOT egg bound and I used ACV and within 3 weeks it was gone and never came back and that was over a year ago)
But Gizmo died between 12:00 Pm last night and 7 A.M this morning and my son is the one who went and checked on him and found him dead(he's 9 yrs old and this is the 1st time he's walked in on a dead bird)
after they left for school ( I didn't want them to see me doing it) I picked Gizmo up gave him a few good scratches to carry on over to the rainbow bridge with him, Got a paper towel damp wrapped him in it (just like you wrap a baby in a blanket) gave him a kiss said my good byes and placed him in a couple plastic Bags tied very tightly and placed him in the fridge
So now one last Good bye and IF i lose any more birds I do believe I will be done I just lost his mate Jessie who was also a year and half and they only had one clutch of 5 babies and I didn't keep any of them because After a break (since they were 1st time parents and raised all 5) I was going to breed them again BUT Jessie died before I got the chance too Neither one showed signs of any kind of being sick I just walked in and she was dead on the cage floor
Gizmo was fine the day before yesterday and all day yesterday Playing, Flying around, doing his normal thing NEVER once showed any signs of being ill at all and now he's gone.
Good Bye Gizmo
