on this webpage i found...
Tiel mutations (http://www.avianweb.com/cockatielmutations.html)
this!...
"A lot of the excitement for cockatiel breeding can be explained by the many beautiful mutations that have occurred over the years. Starting with the normal grey, then pieds, cinnamons, lutinos and pearlies have resulted from matings. Later on white-faces, silvers and albinos have stirred up excitement in aviculture. Recently an orange-crested cock with the orange cheek patch extending into the face and crest has occurred. Breeders are waiting to see what mutation will pop up next, which explains the enthusiasm and joy they get from their hobby of breeding cockatiels."
WHAT THE???
has anyone else heard of this?

no, no pikkies... just that blurb,
not sure quite what to make of it... if it is true i would have thought the news would be all over the bird world...
That would be intresting to see. I LOVE their cheek patches ...orange crests sound adorable.
 That would look unique! I wonder if it's just a freak of nature or an actual mutation.

Wow, I can imagine that would look stunning. I love the little crests on their heads, do they serve a purpose at all, apart from looking good for the opposite sex?

Well, the position of a cockatiel's crest is an indicator of its mood.
I hope someone finds a picture of this orange-crested cockatiel, because that's got to look really interesting.

Oh yes, I know that only too well with Dooby, lol. I was just wondering, like a cat's whiskers help it to judge distance, I didn't know if a crest was the same sort of thing. Maybe not, maybe it's just an indicator to leave well alone when it's upright. :p

Here is an article that explains crest positions. http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/behavior.php

i would love to see this mutation...
I have heard that sometimes though, if you give a cockatiel too much choline, it can cause the orange of the cheek patches to "bleed" over the entire head...
not sure if that's what they are talking about or not...I couldn't access the link from work to take a peek at what's going on there.
It would be absolutely neat though. if it's a true mutation

It would be really great, if there was a new mutation with an orange crest. It would look amazing!! :D I hope there is a real one and like Bea already said not " a freak of nature! "

That one line was the only mention, so there's nothing more on this orange crested tiel.
How would it happened that the colors bleed towards the crest anyway..?
Yeah..maybe some weirdo posted that on the internet. I only really belive stuff from the internet if its on a university website.
I mean, I could write on the internet I bred Blue-Cheeked Cockatiels which are green with blue cheeks. :p

It's possible that he "thinks" he has a new mutation, not realizing that it's TOO much of a mineral/vitamin. The coloring won't actually go away until the bird's first molt, and that's only if the choline is reduced...so anyone buying this "new" mutation unaware, wouldn't know the difference. They would just think that the color changes as a pearl male does during it's first molt.
Maybe this guy genuinly thinks he came across a new mutation...
Probably though, he will find out soon enough that it's just somethign that happens to ALL tiels if given too much choline.

Makes sense.
That makes sense, maybe thats what happened.
Maybe they rubbed their heads on a mineral block. lol :D

That is probably what happened. I hope he does not do that to all his tiels and call it a new mutation, it does not sound safe to me.

I wouldn't be so quick to think its not true just yet...lol I have read on a few different places that many new mutations are in the process of being developed, I also got this on a totally different site the one that was posted so who knows maybe?
The production of Cockatiel mutations is really still in its infancy. Many new mutations are now in the process of being developed. The Yellow Faced cock with yellow cheek patches and retaining all the other yellow coloration of the normal gray is an established new mutation. I have seen an orange crested cock with the deep orange gold of the cheek patch extending into the face and crest. The expectation of producing yet another and more beautiful mutation is one of the things that makes breeding Cockatiels an even more exciting hobby.

Wow that is neat. The lady who lives next store says her son has a white macaw. I asked is she sure it is not a cockatoo and she said it is a macaw :) not sure though as I have not seen a photo of him.
There is a mutation of scarlet macaws which are white. They are extremely rare though.
Could be possible she got it mixed up with a macaw while its a Cockatoo, many people do.
"Blue" mutation Scarlet Macaw:

ya sure they don't refer to them that way because Tiels are 'cousins' of the cockatoos?
