View Full Version : Applied For A Pet Shop Job
So for the last few months i've been saying J is for January, and that's when i'll get a Job. :p I've been really good at stalling up until now. When i was at the mall today i saw an advertisement at the pet shop that they were looking for casual staff for the holidays, with the possibility of long term employment. This is a chain pet store, and i don't especially like some aspects of the store, but it's working with animals, and i would rather do that than scan tins of food at a grocery store all day. I quickly went home, typed up a resume (good thing it requires animal experience or it would've been a very SHORT resume) and went right back and handed it in. I told them my availability (any time in the holidays, i have no social life, hehe) and now i just wait and see. I'm really nervous because i've never actually applied for any job before now, or had a proper job for that matter. It would actually really suit me, because if i ended up working there past the end of the holidays they would want me to work 1-2 shifts during the week/weekend which is all i wanted anyway!
If everyone could cross their fingers that i get the job, that would be great, hehe. I hope i do, because it would give me something to do, it would get me some money (i am so depressingly broke since i stopped getting allowance, hehe) and it would get my parents off my back. Oh, and it would prove to my best friend that i actually meant it when i said i'd get a job in January, not like every other summer holidays for the past 3 years.

My fingers are crossed for you Bea :p I really hope you get this job, its funny I was in a big chain pet store the other day looking around like you I am not crazy about certain aspects but I noticed on there door they were hiring and I thought how cool would that be to work in a pet store :D I have my hands full at home with the kids but maybe one day even if its for a day or two a week I would love it getting paid to do something you love how great would that be

My fingers are crossed too :) it's getting really hard to type :p I hope you get the job. It sounds like fun. Good luck and keep us updated
Ooooh! That would be so cool! :D
If you get the job and you don't like aspects of the pet store you could always change things slightly when no body is looking! ;)

I figure that too, being a large chain store there's standards that are just applied to all the stores in general. But at least if i work there and see a dirty water bowl in the bird cage, i can change it. :p
I hope you get it Bea! You'll love getting some extra money in. Being available all the time will definetly increase your chances, plus your experience with animals. I applied at Petsmart a few weeks ago as a part time job but by the time they called me back I had read the thread with their birds being sick and the last thing I want to do is bring that home to mine. Anyways, I hope you get a call back soon!

yay.. i work in a pet store, and it is great...
when i started pet shop work, it was in a bad one, but i stuck with it for 3 months(changed some things) and then applied for another one... because i had experience i was hired! the new people were great, and although i live in another town now, i have a good pet shop to work in still...
about 4 months after i quit my bad pet shop, it got shut down..
good luck! if they want an interview, go with confidence...
they will be idiots if they miss out on you! :p
Thanks for the support guys!! :D I hope i hear back from them one way or another soon.

its never a bad thing to make a call back to them, just to show you are keen, sometimes people take a resume or two, and even though they have someone really qualified and good, they hire the guy that comes in, or calls and asks how the process was going, and that he is still interested, and that he is still available...
most of the time it takes a bit of persistence to separate yourself from the crowd!
good luck!
by the way it cant hurt to put the fact that you are an administrator for a bird forum (or two :p) into your resume!
I'm still waiting on a call, a few of my friends have said to give it a week, but i'll be in the mall on Friday and i'll pop into the store then and see how things are going. :D

I hope you get it Bea! It would be great! :D
I am trying to get a job at one of the local stores too. They don't actually need any new staff, so I'm just going to hang around the store until the ask me.

Wow I can't think of a better job for you. Plus the store will sell more birds because you will have them all hand trained. Good luck.:)
I'm kinda hoping they don't call me for another day, i've been so sick with the flu the last 2 days and feel like garbage. I would go in for an interview if they asked, but i would rather feel better first. :p

I hope you get the job Bea, it will be really good for you. Of course there is one big drawback.............you just might end up with a lot more pets!!! Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
No news. :( I don't know how long is normal to wait to hear back about a job. And don't worry, if i got the job, all the animals are so badly over priced that there's NO risk of me bringing them home. :p
It can take a week or two sometimes. I ussually call after a week and check the status. Sometimes they keep your resume on file for up to 6mths but if they were hiring I don't see why they would. Just call and check on it-or go in.

I would call and check up with them.
I'm doing the shopping with dad tonight and can check in the store, do i just say i handed a resume in last weekend and was wondering how ..... ? ok, that's where i don't know what i'm asking. :p
Maybe you could ask whether they'ld found anyone yet. :p
Just say...Hi, I applied for a position in your store last week and was wondering what the status of the application was. Ask a manager though.

:D Thanks for that suggestion. I will try to ask the manager, there's always the possibility she won't be working though.
Any manager will do- doesn't have to be a general manager. Or just ask who you can contact to check the status of an application.
 They'll be getting back to people in a week to a week and a half because they still have over 500 resumes to look at.

 WOW! That's alot of people wanting to work at a petstore. I don't even think they have that much staff..I wish you the best. Call them back in a week and check it again-don't wait.. If you don't hear back-it's their loss!
