Hi. So, on my gerbil forum somebody posted this picture of a food that came from a parrot mix they got. Of course you guys were the first ones I thought of to answer the question! :D
Any ideas? I've never seen such a thing before.

I'd check the ingridients. It looks like some sort of pit to me.. What's the brand of food?

That's what I told her! To check the ingredients! :D We'll see. She's a pretty active member, so I'm sure she'll reply soon.
Are pits good to eat? I know to a lot of species that apple seeds are poisionus. I just figured that nothing should eat pits.... ???
Most pits are not good for birds at all. Like you said, most are toxic so that's why I'm wondering what type of pit or seed it is.

Here's what she said...
Haha! erm...
Well i sorta...threw....the packet in the bin :p the other week lol i was filling up tubs and then it filled right up so i chucked the wrapper without thinking.
I got it from marrages, i might pop in and have a look to see. Its called 'Parrot Seed Mix' n you get it in a whoppping big bag!
Its not a stone...i found a smaller one and managed to cut that in half and its sort of...fluffy inside...but not haha
xoxox
I am not sure unless she can find the website and check the ingridients or go back to the store and check them.

Hum.... sorry this had to be moved. I figured the food section would be good since it actually is a part of a parrot food mix. :P Sorry.

Don't be sorry I moved it because its not really related to Cockatiels it was just a question of what is this and it was parrot food I didn't think it was related to cockatiels since no one was asking a question about cockatiels thats the only reason I moved it. hopefully that made sense...lol
How big are they? They could just be a variety of seed. I've never seen anything like them though.

they look like Pine Nuts, which can't be cut because they are so hard, but they can be smashed and the nut is on the inside, they're a fav. of African Greys
we bought a bag for our quaker he didn't like them, so we gave them to a friend who has a grey
ours were dark but not as dark as the ones in the picture though but thats what they look like

if they are between the size of a cherry pip, and a grain of rice, it looks to me like a kind of Acacia seed... which tiels eat in the wild... (Australia's wattle trees)
here is a pik...

and the website its from...

you can buy wattle seed in health food shops around where i live, the seeds are really hard like you say and when you grind it like coffee, it makes a flour that makes a cake tasting like chocolate!
there are many different types of Acacia all over the world...
does look a bit like pine nuts too...
