Easy Lentil Mix!

Legumes are really good for birds, but sometimes a pain in the butt to provide. The easiest way to feed lentils, beans and grains is to buy a packet of Soup Mix from the supermarket. These usually have lots of different types of beans and lentils in them, and some barley and split peas, etc. You just need to rinse it and boil it until it's tender, then feed it once it's cool. If it's got the barley in it then that looks like the little hulled oats in most seed mixes and should entice your tiel to try it. ;)

I think she'll like them! ;) Cookie's been picking the yellowy lentils out thinking they're corn, then she gets all grumpy to find that her "corn" doesn't taste right.

Well i guess i'm going to have to give it a try at some point. i'm sure the birdies will love it because they have yet not eat something i have gave them.

That's what Dooby was eating in the photos....she really, loves it. Like Cookie, Dooby was picking out the lentils, I don't know if she thought they were corn, but she decided that they were nice, she went through the whole lot picking out the lentils, then she started on the peas. It's definitely a winner with her and so easy as well.

I'm glad Dooby likes it! :D To stop wastage, you can freeze the left overs in an icecube tray, pop them out once they're frozen, and keep the cubes in a sandwich bag to defrost as you need. I've got some in the freezer at the moment as my pigs just couldn't get through the batch i made quickly enough.

What type of Legumes and stuff are safe. I could probably find them easier in bulk then the actual package.

I think most are safe for the birds if you look at the foods to avoid the only one listed as not safe is raw lima beans

lol thanks. Going to go out some time this week and buy a whole months worth of this stuff. Just got to find a good way to store it. Hoping the birdies will like it cause i know im not going to eat it.

they will last a long time if they are stored in air tight containers

I can't imagine they're brilliant if not cooked properly, but doubt they would be terrible either. With the stuff about sprouted seeds/legumes - i find that weird as it's widely known that sprouted seeds are great for birds and high in nutrients.
