I've been to the dentist today and I have suffered, five injections later and it still didn't numb the nerves. I had to have a tooth out, the dentist tried and tried to get it out, but it kept breaking up into little bits. She slit my gum to make it easier to get underneath and prise it out, that didn't work, she drilled and drilled and drilled bits of the tooth, over an hour I was sat in that chair, bleeding like a pig, and every so often the drill hitting the nerve. The dentist was covered in my blood, so was the dental nurse and me!! In the end, I was crying with pain and shaking like a leaf. Enough was enough, I said to her to stop and stitch me up, and refer me to the hospital, so that is what she's done. I've got two stitches in my gum and still got the roots of the tooth in there. I have to go into hospital and be put under general anaesthetic to have the roots of the tooth taken out. The waiting list is around 12 months!!!!! So, that's my little episode over with.........no way on this earth am I going to a dentist again. I am still numb from the top of my ear to the bottom of my chin, my tongue is sore because I think she caught it with the drill.......I just want a cup of coffee, but I can't have hot drinks or food.

OK, moan over, now pile on the sympathy and make it good....... LOL!!!

Oh poor Plukie :( I hope you can get those roots out soon. Mabey you can get in as an emergency. That is just terrible. That dentist does not sound like a good one at all. My Brother has roots of his teeth that wrap around his jaw bone. The dentist says he has teeth from, well you know. I told my Mom about your post and she says that sounds like a butcher not a dentist. I hope you feel better soon. Take a pain pill before the freezing wears off. Just a tip ;)

Thanks Spike, don't worry, I've already taken pain pills!! I think I agree with your mum actually.

Oh yeah, the "Oh poor Plukie" bit, that was a nice touch, sympathetic, just as I ordered. :p

Oh my. Talk about ouch. I remember having my surgery on my mouth to get a tooth come down. Painful!. The first few needles didn't hurt. Then when they stuck one up though my gums from the inside of my mouth( behide the tooth) i almost cried. Eyes started watering and when i got up they told me to whip the blood of my mouth. Did i mention i'm scared of doctors? lol. I wont go to a hospital for nothing. Cut my fingers open a few times. Could have used a stitch or to but you wouldn't catch me down to a hospital. No way!

They could tell me I need to go to hospital for any sort of operation tomorrow and I'd go, but I really hate the dentist, especially after today.

I don't mean to offend or anything but your "Oh my!" wasn't a patch on the "Oh poor Plukie" that I got from Spike....just thought I'd mention it. :p

Oh Plukie. **Hugs** Sorry to hear about your day. Not a great dentist by the sound of it, unless you seem to have a very brittle tooth. Ouch, it makes me squeal just thinking about it - I'm certinaly not looking forward to having my tooth removed in a couple of months (it's rotting for some reason). I think we have a reasonably ok dentist though, we're private. The neareat available NHS one was Barnstaple!

Hope you are feeling better soon. :)

 OMG!!! I do not envy you!!! ***massive hugs*** That sounds like the stuff nightmares are made of!! What is it with those numbing injections numbing EVERYTHING except the tooth!! I once had 3 needles trying to numb a tooth for a filling, but nope, didn't help in the slightest. If your tooth is all broken up and horrible, surely you can get in to have it taken out sooner at the hospital? They can't just leave your tooth like that...can they????

PS: Here's a flower to make you feel better! :flowers:

01-25-2008, 06:14 PM
You'll be fine Rosie I'm sure, it was because my tooth was still "alive" that was causing the problems. I can't get a NHS dentist either, this was private, although she only charged me for the xray because she felt sorry for me I guess. lol. It cost me £20 instead of around £80.

Bea, the ***massive hugs*** won so far in the sympathy stakes, well done. I felt the love. lol. I don't really know about the hospital, I know the waiting list is about 12 months, and they said they would put it down as urgent, but to be honest, that doesn't really do much. She stitched the gum up over the roots......I think, so if that heals ok, then it won't be too bad, I hope. Thank you so much for the flower, that cheered me up. lol.

Thank you Laura, I'm sooooo tired but I can't sleep for the pain. I've had painkillers but it's not really doing much at the moment. No, no coffee and for a coffee addict like me, I'm having withdrawal symptoms!!! I've only had two cups all day, I usually drink two JUGS of 10 cups each!!! Sheesh, I can't wait until tomorrow, I'll be drinking it then, even if it is luke warm and through a straw!! lol.

01-25-2008, 06:32 PM
YIKESSS!!! And I thought my last visit was terrible..I had to eat room temp soup out of a straw for 4 days...I'm sorry it went so awful...hope everything works out soon.

01-25-2008, 06:34 PM
Yikes you must really want coffee. But no straws for you, I heard its not good when you get a tooth out or almost out

Laura
01-25-2008, 06:35 PM
I find tooth pain one of the worst things to get rid of even while taking pain killers :( I had an infection and had to have a root canal done at christmas and I was in pain for 5 days I took tylenol 3 and it did nothing it was so bad I would fall asleep and it would wake me up throbbing so I can only imagine how much pain your in because what you went through is way worse :(

Plukie
01-25-2008, 06:36 PM
Really? I hadn't heard that, well, maybe I'll spoon it in then. lol. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be able to open my mouth a bit better and drink from a cup. At the moment, I've got a glass of water that I'm literally just wetting my mouth with, not even enough to make me swallow!

Whoops, that was answering Spike.

Laura, if I have to put up with this for five days, I'm going to take myself to hospital and camp out until I get seen. It will be a Plukie Protest! lol.

By tomorrow she'll be fine. I HAD to have my french vanilla ice coffee and drank it thru a straw ..I didn't enjoy it as much but it worked out..

Plukie
01-25-2008, 06:41 PM
Yeah, I'll be ok by tomorrow. I'll let the coffee wash over the stitches and all will be well. :p:p:p I won't care what's happening then, once I've had my coffee fix.

Plukie
01-25-2008, 06:42 PM
Right, I think I'm going to go back to bed and see if I can sleep a little bit. Catch you all tomorrow and thanks for the sympathy.......I lapped it up. LOL!!!!

Using a straw after surgery can cause what is called dry socket a dry socket is when the blood clot inside the hole of the pulled tooth area that is supposed to help the healing process is pulled out by a sucking motion as in smoking, or using a straw its suggested to wait 24-48 hrs after having a tooth pulled before you use one.

xxxSpikexxx
01-25-2008, 06:45 PM
When I got my tooth pulled. I got a list from the dentist saying no straws ect. Until you heal some. Plukie can you get seen buy another dentist? The girl at my work went to a dentist they put her to sleep and took out her wisdom teeth. And she did not have to go to a hospital for that. Hope you feel better soon and can have your coffee ;)

hey there,
l haven't posted for a while but l have been reading this forums posts almost everyday.

Plukie, when l saw your post and read about your terrible and horrific experience, l knew l had to post.
l'm so sorry that you had to endure all that pain and that it is still not over yet. l wish l could take your pain away.
l'm wondering if you buy from the pharmacy or drug store some Anbesol or some Orajel? that might help with some of the pain and discomfort that you are having.
at the moment l'm also having pain in my mouth and l'm using the Orajel extra strength. it seems to work but unfortunately it is only temporarily:(
l hope that you will be able to get into the hospital sooner then 12 months  that is just insane.

I was having some TERRIBLE tooth pains and ambesol and orajel never worked for me. Ambesol did for a very short time and that was it. Orajel made it hurt worse for some reason. With you Plukie, if 5 shots of novacaine didn't work I doubt this will. As a last resort I use to hold white rum..overproof in my mouth for a few minutes and it made it go COMPLETLY numb for hours. I hate the taste but with that pain I tried anything.

ouch i thought my last few trips were awful it sounds more like your nerves are wrapped around your tooth and she didn't notice it Which wouldn't be the 1st time, I've heard it happen many times

Last time i went i got 10 teeth pulled ( so far i've got upper dentures i haven't went back to get the last 5 teeth i have left pulled yet, Dentist are one of my biggest phobias)

but that didn't hurt much at all oddly enough it was the time before when i only had 3 or 4 teeth pulled and she had to numb me a toal of 15 times and i still felt it all! I don't numb easily and i keep telling them that and they don't listen

but then again i told every dentist i've ever seen a million times DO NOT PUT FILLINGS IN just pull the tooth, because the fillings are lucky if they last me a week and none of them listend and i'd be calling them in a few days to tell them " i told you so im sitting here holding the stupid filling you just had to put in" now will you pull the stupid tooth

Hope you get to feel better soon I normally sleep the rest of the day away after seeing a dentist

Well, I've managed to get a couple of hours dozing, but this morning I have a swelling on the side of my face the size of a golf ball. Thanks for your concern everybody. I'm taking paracetamol painkillers, I have to be a bit careful what I can and can't take because I have a bad heart and high blood pressure as well, so some of the thing that you have mentioned may not be possible.......coffee certainly is though. lol. I've heard of dry socket Laura, that's really painful actually, my daughter went through that, they then have to pack the hole with something jellylike. There really are some horror stories with dentists, I certainly won't be going back to her for any treatment. I'll let her take a look next week, but that's it, she's not touching it, she can just look to see how it's healing.

Laura
01-26-2008, 09:41 AM
You should try and put some ice on it to get the swelling down you poor thing, take some pictures and show the dentist she should feel bad enough to try and get you into the hospital sooner, I am glad to hear she didn't charge you for the job hell she should be giving you money for your pain and suffering, I have never had the dry socket either but I have also been warned and heard how painful it is, did you manage to get some coffee in this morning?

Plukie
01-26-2008, 01:21 PM
Oh yes!! The coffee is going down a treat. Actually, I was saying to Darryl last night that it's my tongue that is hurting far more than my gum, it felt as though she had cut it with the scalpel or something, it felt like an ulcer, well, I looked at it in the mirror today and guess what..........she's cooked it!!! She must have touched it with the drill or something when she was drilling and there is a big round burn and then loads of little ones running down the side of my tongue. Of course with it all being numb, I didn't feel it then.

Laura
01-26-2008, 01:32 PM
OMG!! what the heck your poor tongue I have known people to have had trouble at the dentist but I have never heard of one getting there tongue burned that must be so painful :( I feel so bad for you she obviously didn't know what the heck she was doing I seriously think there should be some sort of compensation for you pain and suffering that is just awful what you had to go through she should have stopped when she realized she couldn't do it properly.

Plukie
01-26-2008, 01:35 PM
Oh I agree with you Laura....I know my tooth was a devil to get out (obviously) but she should have stopped and referred me to the hospital before she did so much damage. I won't ever go back to that practice.

Laura
01-26-2008, 01:39 PM
To bad there wasn't someone else you could go see to document all this damage she needs to go back to dental school and get some more practise I understand accidents happen and things go wrong but thats just crazy she should have stopped immediately and sent you to someone that could do it or like you said straight to the hospital.

Plukie
01-26-2008, 01:44 PM
Yeah, I agree. Well, it's done now.....or not actually, so I just have to hope it heals ok, or that they get me in hospital pretty soon to get it out properly.

I've never had dry socket, and as soon as i walk out of the dentist office i'm lighting a ciggerette and drinking out of a straw which is 2 things most tell you not to do

I got a couple teeth pulled when i lived in n.c I have to say best dentist i've ever seen,it didn't hurt one numbing is all it took and i watched it bieng done on the screen

and he told me to only drink out of a straw for the first 2 days - every other one told me not to drink out of a straw after i got them pulled

As a quick update, my tongue is no better three days on, so I've decided to report the dentist, to make a formal complaint and to see a solicitor, this is just so painful it's ridiculous.

Aly
01-28-2008, 12:47 AM
Wow..Im sorry Plukie- I would do the same. There are some that work so smoothly and make the experience decent (as decent as a dentist visit can go) and there are some that don't exactly do that..

Bea

I'm sorry your not feeling any better. I hope something can be done NOW to help relieve the pain. :(

:blush::blush::blush:

Hands up!! I got it wrong, apparently! I was so, so sure she had burnt me because it looked like a burn and it certainly feels like a burn, but I went to the doctors today and he said it was a "Stress ulcer" apparently, because me tongue was stretched in an abnormal position for it, it sort of stretched the skin and that caused an ulcer, so it wasn't really the dentists fault. Ok, having said that, I still don't like the way she went about getting the tooth out and the fact that she couldn't do it after drilling and drilling etc as I've said, but there is no recourse on that, I have to wait for a hospital appointment and get it done that way. The doctor has give me some Difflam Oral Rinse which deadens my mouth and cleans it as well, so that's good stuff. Anyway, I'm still in pain, still can't eat or drink anything properly, sick of cool drinks, it's a good job I don't mind cold coffee, but there is nothing I can do about complaining.

Aly
01-28-2008, 11:27 AM
Sorry Plukie...I can't believe a hospital has such a long waiting list..Be sure to keep it clean and everything using that stuff. The last thing you want is an infection in the area.

Plukie
01-28-2008, 11:40 AM
Yeah, that would just about finish me off. lol. I am on antibiotics as well, so hopefully that shouldn't happen.

Yikes, at least you got something that will help. I still don't think you should of gotten a stress ulcer though, Sounds painful
