I went to check on her and she was gone :( she looks so peaceful just like she is sleeping curled up on her side, My daughter is at my moms house I don't know how I am even going to tell her for almost two years she has loved and cared for this little hamster and I know she is going to be devastated Lulu was just a sweet little soul never bite anyone and liked to sit in yours hands and run around she was a pleasure to have but we knew her time was coming over the last year she has slowly turned from a dark grey colour to white we jokingly called her our little old lady she will be greatly missed :(
RIP little old lady

awwww that is horrible :( Are you going to let her see her one last time? I know it sounds a bit horrible but it might help her say goodbye. She must of lived a good life with you guys. I have never heard of watching a hamster turn white before. She lived a long and Iam sure happy life. Rip Lulu :(

I am not sure yet Jaime what I am going to do, I called Ian at work and he asked the same thing, my daughter does not handle these things well there will be a lot of screaming and crying when she finds out so I am not looking forward to this, it was the weirdest thing watching her go white just like an older person would turn grey I have never seen it happen before in a hamster, I do believe she had a happy life we gave her everything a hamster could want, she was handled and let out in her ball daily and she had a very long life as far as hamsters go average life span is two years so I think she did good.

Iam sure you will figure it out. That is the hardest part of having pets. Yet we just keep doing it to ourselves. I think the good times far outweigh the bad though. Still I can understand completley about your daughter. I don't take death well either :(

awww RIP Lulu :(
Was she a dwarf or Syrian? Dwarfs turn white in winter, or go pale. Syrians don't, they keep their coats. Unless she was a light cream to start with?

Omg....oh I'm sorry Laura..Poor Alexis. I don't handle them well either. I don't know how you should do it. When I had Bella (budgie) and I woke up and found her dead I screamed so loud. I guess I was partially in shock since had just opened my eyes. I was living at home and my dad ran in to see what happen and I couldn't even talk. He took her away and him and my mom buried her in a nice jewlery box. My mom cried too. I didn't want to see her like that but it was too late-now I can't forget it..Sorry blabbing.. I think it would be better if Alexis didn't see her...I'm really sorry about Lulu...she lived a long time with you.Let us know how it goes.

She was a dwarf hamster and no her coat didn't just turn white in the winter she started turning white last year in patches it actually started in the warmer weather she maintained her grey colour she just had white coming through mostly on the top of her and it become more and more as she got older I have had a few dwarf hamsters over the years and she was the first to do this.

Thanks Aly I am thinking the same thing I don't think it would be a good idea for her, when Reggie passed and she found him it was awful she screamed and cried all night she put him in a little box and wouldn't let me take him she didn't want to let go of him so I don't think it would be good for her to go through that again, I know most people don't handle death well but for some its even harder :( my dad passed away 5 years ago and I can't even say his name without her having a meltdown she was papa's little girl
I'm sorry about your dad Laura. I think I'll be the same. I love him so much!

About 2 weeks ago, one of my hamsters passed away :( she was about 3 years old aswell, very old for a hamster. My mum found her in her bed just looking like she was sleeping.
We owned 5 hamsters but are now down to two!
And squeak (that was her name) was the one who brought 10 cute baby hamsters to the world! I miss all of our hamsters that have gone !!
Laura I am so sorry to hear about Lulu, I know how it feels, just seeing them lieing there! :(
 I'm so sorry Laura. :( I know how much you and your daughter loved Lulu. Maybe you can get a nice little flower plant to go above her grave. I always do that when i lose a special pet.

That's a really good idea. My mom got this wind mill thing from Walmart that you stick in the ground and it has an angel with a bird on it. It's really nice to see it there everytime I go visit.

Thanks everyone, Thanks Bea thats a good suggestion the only problem is I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to get into the ground its frozen right now so I don't know what to do, Alexis is home and has not stopped crying for the last few hours she is just heartbroken I decided to clean out the cage and remove Lulu so she couldn't see her I thought it would just make things harder for her now I just have to figure out what to do with her :(
I know of some people who bury their lost birds in a large plant pot with flowers. This way they can take it with them should they ever move house. You could do this, at least until the ground softens up.

Thats a good idea Bea thanks I didn't even think of that, I think I will go with that I don't think there is anyway I will be able to break the ground and I was getting all upset over here.
*hugs* I'm sure you'll find a nice little pot for Lulu, it'll be a nice way to remember her.

We bury our lost hamsters in the garden, each one together as a family  I always remember them all in my heart :(
Hope you find a nice place to put Lulu! Hope your sorrow calms down soon!

Awww, I'm so sorry to hear about poor little Lulu, it's so sad when little pets go over the bridge.
We always plant a rose bush in a pot.
