For our beloved Speedy

On Wednesday we lost our beloved Speedy. He was 20 years old. 1991-2011 My mom purchased him when I was 10 years old. He passed away on my son's 10th birthday.

We have been taking care of Speedy for the last 3 years for my mom. I didn't know his death would be so hard to take. It is so quite in my house with not hearing him. I am so depressed when it comes time in the mornings to uncover him and I can't. I get so sad when I go into my bedroom and see the empty space where he was hanging just 2 days ago. I just feel so sad. I have read that cockatiels usually live between 12-15 years. But you can get between 15-20 out of a bird with proper love and care. So Speedy had just turned 20 years old at the end of 2010, so 20 years for him I guess wasn't too bad. I just can't believe that his death has been so hard. I never thought it would be this hard when he passed away.

My other animals have noticed a change too. They go into my bedroom and see that he isn't there. I guess we are all going through a sad time.

WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU DEAR SPEEDY! NO OTHER BIRD WILL EVER BE ABLE TO REPLACE YOU!

Speedy was lucky to live a long and loved life, and don't forget you'll always have the good memories. Although memories can be tough, they can also make you laugh and smile, just try to remember the good times you had with him.

He must have been very happy, and he was in his 20's which is a decent stretch for a tiel!!!! He definitely sounds like he was loved and you'll always remember him. :)

Thank you very much for your wonderful comments and kind words. He did live a very long and happy life. We do miss him very much. Just isn't the same without him. It is sure quite and I just haven't been able to get used to it quite yet. I think it will take some time of course. But I agree, that we have the good memories to remember him. Those will never fade. I just wish he didn't have to leave so soon. I wish we could have had at least another year with him..... He was too great of a bird to just go... I know they all have to sometime, but I just wasn't ready yet....

It brings a bit of apprehension to my heart as Kugel will be 21yrs old this April. He has been a great friend for so very long. I pray for your healing and comfort.

Thank you very much for your kind comment pache11. I hope my story doesn't bring too much apprehension to your heart since your bird is almost 21. I'm sure your tiel will live a long and happy life. I wish Speedy would have had just a couple more years to live. My family and I miss him very much. Yesterday has been a month since his passing and my mom has had a very hard time with it. She was his main care provider for 18 years until he came to live with my family and I. I'm sure the stress of moving 3 times in the last 3 years really did a number on him, but we could tell that it was his time to go about 3 months before he passed. I don't think that 20 years for a tiel was a bad life, I just wish we could have made it a little bit longer before his poor little heart gave out.
