So this summer I am building a bird room and an aviary (fingers crossed, I need to nag our neighbour to help!). I was thinking about getting a new fid. My mom is getting her male budgie(s) this summer as well. I am going to adopt a B&G Macaw in a couple years, but I'ld like a new bird to prepare me, one that isn't as big as a macaw but not little either. Also I love birds and I'ld like another.

I was thinking of an Eclectus. I also thought of an African Grey or Amazon, but I am trying to get a deal with the humane society to send us all their birds, because birds need specialized care and most humane societies around here send their birds to someone. I also am waiting for a bird to come into my friend's rescue, she only has finches at the moment and I am not really a finch person, so I will have plenty of time to foster birds like that. :)

Another rescuer has had lots of ekkies and reccomended them to me, she said they make wonderful pets. I have another friend with a female ekkie, and she is just a dream. They are supposed to be moodier than the males, but I like them and would prefer one over a male. :)

Does anyone have any Ekkie experience, or info on them? Thanks!

PS - For names, I was thinking Twister for a male and Jubilee for a female. :)

I don't own one but they are like my favorite parrot except my Grey and Flicky There is a bonus of having them you don't have to pay for DNA sexing :p. But anyway.. they are not as noisy as a too or macaw or amazon but are a bit louder than a Grey they are very playful and are not to messy they have a lot more energy than Grey parrots they live from about 35-50 years and you can there age from the color of the beak I think it turns fully black when there three the few facts I know about them as I was thinking of getting one when I'm a bit older..

Thank you! Yes you don't have to pay for DNA sexing lol. I've met males and females and I like the females a bit more.

I like greys too but there is plenty of time to get them down the road. ;)

If I was to get them I would probably have to get a boy and girl brother and sister I wouldn't be able to choose lol!:p

Electus are really beautiful birds. But I don't think I would get a bird to prepare for another bird. Like the magazine I read said there are no such things as practice pets. When you get your b&g macaw you will then have too big birds. Let us know what you decide and post some pics :D

I don't think you should get one just to prepare you..just learn all you can from other, from reading, etc and decide on the perfect breed. When you're ready, then get that one.

Thanks. I'm not getting one for the sole purpose of preparing myself and then tossing it aside when I get the Macaw or anything, lol. :) I've been interested in Ekkies for awhile, and I thought I might consider one. :)

I'm researching them and so far they sound like good birds. :)

Eclectus parrots are lovely colours, people say they are good birds and there are not many bad things that people say about them
Keep Us updated on your decision! :p
