Has anyone else noticed that we now have banner ads? Also have you noticed that these banner ads also will change and be related to some place that you recently have been on the internet?

Yes...I think Dave said a while ago it was the only way we could keep from having to pay to be members was having the ads on the site. Kinda annoying but I guess we can deal with it if we don't have to pay for it. The fact that they change to relate to what we type is kinda creepy I'm not gonna lie lol.

The ads are annoying enough that I think I may stop posting here. I don't like the creepy feeling in knowing that sites I visit have track back software that puts their ads at places I enjoy. It is disturbing to know that this is being done to ALL the forum members if they do any searches on the internet...meaning they are picking up bots that are following where they go on the internet.

The banner ads don't show up on my interface; perhaps there is a setting for your browser that you can adjust. I'll ask my friend Tighe, who helped me set mine up.

If there is a setting the Board Administrator should post this info so that those that do not want to see these banner ads should have a choice.
If not, then I am outta here.

:( please dont go, everyone loves you here!
my ads are always for cat stuff, kijiji pets, bird cage websites, how to train an african grey parrot and right now, netflix, but ive never been on netflix... its annoying, but its also easy to ignore after awhile... i think its because they werent here before that makes them annoying.
but yes, perhaps there should be something to turn them off if a member doesnt want to deal with them. even if its like a small fee for those who really hate them

What browser are you using? I'm using chrome with adblock (very easy to install)
A link to google chrome : http://www.google.com/chrome/
A link to adblock for chrome : https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom
If you use firefox, you can also get adblock for that from here : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
It is all free and safe. The ads track where you have been, without adblock I would get credit history ones :P I'm assuming it is to do with tracking cookies but can't be bothered learning about the mechanics!
I'm sure there will also be adblock for IE but I don't use internet explorer so I don't know what to trust and what not to!
If you hate all tracking and javascript that is on most websites, you can download something called NoScript which removes it all unless you give it permission to load.

Thanks helenut :) I downloaded Chrome and added the adblock. What a relief to be rid of the banner.
And Chrome is nicer because it also underline works to let me know I'm making a typo.
Now it would be nice if the Site Admin would do a notice in reference to the banner ads and that there is the option to use another browser with the adblock download.
I had just ordered a pizza from a site and it was really upsetting that all of a sudden there was their track back in the banner. Over the last few weeks this has happened from several other sites I've been on.

I think it would be nice if there was an option to pay or donate to the site and the adds would go away.

I addressed this awhile ago and Dave the Admin. said that without the banner ads then we would have to pay for the site eventually. I don't like this idea as it would mean that people searching for information on the internet wouldn't have access to all the info on here that turns up in a google search unless they paid for it.... and I wouldn't want to see that happen - I doubt people would pay for something unless they could try it first. Search tracking and targeted advertising is everywhere on the net now. It's a controversial topic, but at least you get ads that are somewhat related to your interests.

Still...our forum members should not be subjected to being vulnerable to track back info when on the internet and having that crap show up in this site banner. I feel this is an invasion of privacy.
And in reading this post, it sure does not sound like he plans on leaving this site free: http://talkcockatiels.com/showthread.php?p=171698#post171698

I didn't realize you had to pay for TB...WOW.:(
I didn't realize you had to pay for TB...WOW.:(You don't have to pay to use TB. There is an optional paid membership to turn off the ads. All the information is still free and available to everyone, members and guests alike. All features are still available for free to registered members. I'm not sure where anyone got the idea that TB was paid only now, especially given it says right on the website that it's free to register and everything is still clearly visible to guests as it's always been...

The whole point of Google using targeted advertising is so you at least receive relevant ads. Lets face it, if you have to view ads, at least they can be relevant! :)
I think it would be nice if there was an option to pay or donate to the site and the adds would go away. This is certainly a possibility and I will add it if there seems to be interest.
Now it would be nice if the Site Admin would do a notice in reference to the banner ads and that there is the option to use another browser with the adblock download.I'm sure you would agree it wouldn't make good business sense to promote a way to bypass our primary source of revenue. ;) While I agree the banner ads aren't the ideal solution (I've never really been a fan of them or using them), I'm certainly not going to encourage people to bypass them, because we need the money generated from them.
