View Full Version : Redecorating The Aviary!

I couldn't think of an indoor use for the awesome branch i found at the park the other day, so i decided to get creative and redecorate the aviary!

First things first i had to move the flock into the only clean spare cage i had...hmmm...

Probably should try to work quickly.

Now for some BEFORE photos
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Aviary%20Birds/13February2008-aviaryredecorate005C.jpg
There was a rack of dowel perches in the covered part of the aviary, and a boing which i had stretched out as a big rope perch!

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Aviary%20Birds/13February2008-aviaryredecorate008C.jpg
And there were some branches in the front half too!

Next step was to empty the aviary of all the old stuff.
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Aviary%20Birds/13February2008-aviaryredecorate010C.jpg
I haven't seen the aviary looking like this for a looong time!

Then there was a bit of drilling holes and stringing beads on rope, to give me this where the dowel perches were!
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Aviary%20Birds/13February2008-aviaryredecorate013C.jpg
I beaded the rope i hung the branch with to stop the forever-chewing ladies from causing a big CRASH by chewing through the rope.

In the front half i had more branches and the rope perch too.

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Aviary%20Birds/13February2008-aviaryredecorate016C.jpg

So that's that! I was going to get the budgies when i thought there was one more thing the newly decorated could use before welcoming the flock back into their home!

So now there's just one thing left to do!

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Aviary%20Birds/13February2008-aviaryredecorate024C.jpg
FREEDOM!

And then it was time for everyone to explore their new jungle.

And plenty of bathing opportunities in the damp leaves!

A job well done in my opinion! And it looks to me like the flock is very happy with the improvements too!

Wow, what a lot of work, but it was so obviously worth it, it looks fabulous and your little birdies look so happy to have a new home. In your photo FREEDOM, I looked at it and thought why on earth has Bea put a fan on top of the cage? Then I realised it was a budgie flapping his/her wings. LOL!!

WOW, looks great. In fact, I wouldn't mind being a budgie in your aviary lol. I think I need to redecorate my aviary sometime....actually half term is coming up so maybe then. Also, are you budgies tame? Mine aren't lol.

How big is your aviary?

Awww! That picture with all of them in one cage looks so funny! Talk about crowded..hehe. The aviary looks great-they look like they liked it. I mean to ask you, how do you get in and out of it without any of them flying out? Is there a safety door or something?

Thanks all!!

Now, there were a few questions.

It didn't take long to catch them all and put them in the small cage, about 5 mins of scooping them up in my butterfly net.

My aviary birds definitely aren't tame, but i managed to get through the whole exercise without getting bitten once! :p

The aviary is 1.5m x 1.5m x 1.85m :)

I don't have a safety door, there's a flap of plastic which hangs down and for the most part i cover any gap as i move into the aviary. I did nearly lose Bee when i was taking the little cage in yesterday, but i surprised myself with some impressively fast reflexes and netted her as she tried to make her escape.

I love your aviary

Is that a tin/metal shed? by any chance my b/f said it looks like one and would be a great idea to use one for an Aviary ( i think looking at your pictures got his mind a going lol) if so it's better then his 1st idea of an outside aviary thats for sure :)

There's our old shed behind the aviary, i've thought it'd be a good aviary but it's too much hassle for me. :p We just bought our aviary, it's Colourbond which is a major shed/fence brand here.

The aviary looks fantastic Bea! :D
You have a good knack for designing a fun and practical place for the birds to feel at home. With all the new branches/ leaves and toys they will have lots to do and are sure to be very happy.
Well done!
