I have not been on this forum for quite a while and coming back here I have some sad news to share yet again. My baby Maui, who we got from a breeder for very cheap, passed away on my birthday, June 29th. He went into a shock and started having these horrible seizures. My hubby and I rushed into another room to get a carrying case for him to take him to a local vet but it was already too late when we came back into the bedroom. We did find out that when he was a baby, the parents fed him wood shavings that had lead paint on them (for unknown reasons) and those shavings were lodged in his digestive system. So pretty much, if it wasn't the lead poisoning, it would have been the shavings that would eventually get to the poor little guy. We miss him very much but I am so happy he is free from pain. May my little angel fly freely with Storm and Kiba

Thank you all for such nice comments. I really appreciate all the love and care that is spread around this forum. It makes me feel much better about the situation. Maui was only around 4 months old or so but with the lead in his system, he would probably not have made it to one year or even 6 months. Sadly, the breeder we bought him from must use recycled chips of wood that had some sort of lead paint on them for their nestboxes so the parents fed them to all the chicks. Some of our other birds from them were showing some strange signs, but after getting exams for them all, we at least know they are healthy. Anyways, I am just happy that Maui is out of pain and can be happy with all the other cockatiels on the rainbow bridge <3

I'm so very sorry about your little Maui!! Yes, it is heartbreaking! My tiel Ollie is about 4 months old, and I would be crying my eyes out if something happened to her.
It is terrible to hear what actually happened to her. I am appalled to think a breeder would be using wood chips (with paint on them) for the nest boxes.
Fly High, little Maui!! We know you are happy on the Rainbow Bridge! And further, we know that one day you will be reunited with Maui! I'll be keeping you in my prayers!
