Hi everyone, hope your all well. I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice please?
My gorgeous 8 year old male Lutino tiel, "lucky bags" passed away yesterday. Im absolutely devestated by his passing and miss him terribly. I still have my 16 year old grey male "joey" who will come and sit with me for a little cuddle but will then bite me hard. My question is this, my poor lucky bag suffered a trauma on Thursday, he was not injured or hurt in any way but throughout the day was very quiet and withdrawn. He was still drinking. The following day he again was quiet and unsteady on his feet, so i lay on the sofa so he could have his cuddles and cuddle into my chin.
When he was breathing, every minute or so he would push a breath out and at tbe end of his breath would kind of squeak. I noticed his breath did not smell normal and did smell. He then started to look like he was having a seizure of some sort as his body and face were contorting. He passed on shortly after.
Im not sure if something was wrong health wise or was it because he was in shock from what happened to him the day before? I cant understand the bad breath and seizure like actions? Can anyone tell me what they think please, i would be most grateful. Im heartbroken to have lost him. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Only thing i can find of bad breath is a yeast infection but hope someone more experienced will tell you, you can take him to the vet to find out what was the cause.

Im so sorry for your loss :(

Sorry for your loss. If you would take the bird to a vet the vet can do a necropsy and this will help to tell you the cause of death.

Oh my goodness I'm so sorry to hear that :(. You were able to give him comfort in his final moments which is a wonderful thing.

What was the trauma Lucky suffered?

Hi lperry82, thank you for your post. I did read up on bad breath and what you mentioned did come up. He didnt have bad breath the night before he died though which is what is puzzling me. I like the pictures of your tiels and bunnies. Beautiful.

Thanks very much everyone for your lovely words and comments. I really appreciate it, more than you know. My other tiel Joey was in a seperate cage to Lucky and his poops are normal. Whilst i was at work on Thursday my dad had let him and joey out to fly in the livingroom. Lucky flew to the sofa to see my dad and my dads cat grabbed him for a second and then let him go. Dad checked him over throughly, he had no bite marks, no puncture wounds, not a scratch was on him. To make matters worse my dad didnt tell me about this until an hour before Lucky died in my arms. It was either shock that killed my baby or the bad breath was an underlying health issue that i was not aware of. He didnt have bad breath the night before he died, he was just quiet.

I'm sorry for your loss. Cat bacteria is very dangerous to birds, and if the cat made a tiny scratch or left bacteria on the feathers for the bird to ingest during preening, the bird may have died from an infection.

Thanks to everyone for posting a message, your comments have been a great comfort and confirmed a few things I thought could have killed or attributed to my gorgeous little man. RIP Lucky Bags (Baglett) you were such a very loving and gentle bird who always brought a smile to my face. X

I'm so sorry for your loss...as tielfan said it was probably an infection from the cat. Since his breath smelled, it was most likely a yeast infection. RIP Lucky Bags!

Aww thats very sweet of you Sar, thank you. My other tiel and i were lay on the sofa earlier having a cuddle. Joey my other beautiful tiel isnt as affectionate as Lucky Bags was. Joey has a completely different personality and is a very independant little man. Luckybags was unique, but he will be sadly missed but remembered very fondly. Thanks again Sar, really appreciate it.
