I'm having my first professional driving lesson on Friday afternoon. :p I've done about 40hrs driving this year with dad teaching me but i'm still scared to park and i hate driving in busy traffic. This way i can learn and i'll also be getting competencies signed off as i go which will go towards my license. There are 22 competencies i need to get signed off and then i can go and get my provisional license! :D Then dad can send me on all the annoying little trips like taking mum to the mall or myself to horse riding.

I'm a bit nervous about driving in a different car with a complete stranger, but hopefully it'll all be ok!

Good luck Bea with the driving lessons, Don't be nervous I actually found it easier to drive with a stranger then with family when I took mine at least they don't yell at you like my dad did when I did something wrong....hehe

Awww Bea! That's good! You'll be okay! Like Laura said, it's easier with a stranger!!! My dad taught me (he was acctually a driving instructor in Romania) but I never liked driving with them anywhere.

My dad is awesome with not yelling, he just sits there giving directions and sometimes double checking if it's safe for me to change lanes. :p

ahh I remember those days, I never drove with my dad ( not sure why) but oh my lord my mom drove me insane. back in her day the drivers ed cars had a Break on the passenger side SO if the student driver did somthing wrong the Driver Ed teacher could use the break it even had a steering wheel on that side. and I'd be driving along and she'd be over there Slamming her foot into the floor board screaming and yelling at me - - YEAH LIKE THAT HELPS ONE BIT,

where i took my driving test, a Sherrif rode with You - oh that was NOT good for me, I'm petrafied of cops - don't know why BUT i am, well needless to say i'm 31 yrs old and still no drivers license

I CAN DRIVE! just can't drive with certain people, alot of traffice or in a area I'm not familar with........ soooo I can drive in my home town where I grew up for the last 28 years by my self just fine!!, our town is really small, we have NO cops in our town, and we have no street lights, (stop lights) and only 2 stop signs one at the end of the road going in both dirrections

and since i've moved to indiana my b/f and his buddy has been Hounding me for the last 2 years to get my license ( so they can have a designanted driver) which I told them even if i had them IT wouldn't happen I'd tell them to call a cab I'm NOT going to wake my kids up in the middle of the night just to go get a couple roudy drunks - They got me confused with some one who cares LOL

But I've been told Every single state is different some easier then others - I may give it a try one of these days, but I don't see the point when i get behind the wheel i'm scared to death, i go into major panic and anxity attacks and my heart starts racing really really fast - and since i've already got heart problems and my heart doesn't beat correctly to start with - - it is NOT the best thing for me - and they won't GET That through their thick skulls

I get anxious in traffic but i can usually keep my head to get through it and then have a whinge about it afterwards. I can't drive under pressure which is why i'm doing log book instead of the one off test. :p

I took my driving test 24 years ago!!! I learnt to drive when we were living in Germany, then when we came back to England, it was like learning to drive all over again, we drive on the opposite side of the road to Germany.

I'm sure you will be fine Bea, it's just a matter of getting in the car and getting on with it really. That's a funny sort of system you have over there though. Here, when you are 17 you can apply for a provisional driving licence and have lessons, then when you think you are good enough, you take a test and if you pass, that's it, you get a full licence, if you fail, you still have your provisional to keep having lessons until you take another test. Oh yeah, we have a written test as well that you have to do before you take your practical test.

Good luck, I'm sure you will be ok, it's all a matter of confidence. Just think of the car as a horse. LOL.

Oh yeah, we have a written test as well that you have to do before you take your practical test.

We can get our learner's license here when we're 15 years 9 months. To get that we have to do a test called Road Ready which asks a whole bunch of common sense and road rules questions (e.g. it's raining should you - a) speed up to avoid the water, b) slow down and watch for dangers :p). Then we can take lessons (either be taught by a parent or pay for professional lessons) and when we're 17 we can either do log book (what i'm doing) or a practical test. Once you pass one of those you can get your provisional license which means you can drive on your own and do anything other drivers can do, but if you break road rules you're in bigger trouble than if you have a full license. :p I didn't get my learner's license until this time last year, and dad's been teaching me.

Good luck, I'm sure you will be ok, it's all a matter of confidence. Just think of the car as a horse. LOL.
I think a car is easier to steer than a horse. Sometimes we have to "merge" at horse riding and our teacher laughs saying how glad she is we're not out on the roads. ;)

LOL!! I couldn't hope to steer a horse, in fact I wouldn't get near enough to a horse to even get on it!!! I've always been a little bit afraid of horses, they are soooo big!!

So ride a little one. :p I have ridden a pony small enough that my feet touched the ground when i rode bareback. LOL!!! Cars are MUCH scarier than horses. Having said that i've had horse crashes but not car crashes...

I just finished my driving lesson! It was surprisingly un-scary! I actually enjoyed it. Except the car was all backwards to what i'm used to but i adapted to that easy enough. I got two competencies marked off: Cabin Drill (adjusting seat and mirrors, lol) and Stopping procedure. The teacher, who was really nice, says that it usually takes about 8-10 lessons to complete the log book, and that i shouldn't have a problem doing that *fingers crossed*. ;)

Me!!! :p But i use dads car or the driving schools car, so the seat and mirrors are never right for me.

Ah! That's why. You just wait until you're driving your car. You won't be bothered with all the extras.

Well when i have my P's i don't suppose i'll do the "push and pull" steering i was taught today either. :p If you have your own car there would be no reason to check mirrors cause they would never get changed!

What on earth is "push and pull" steering?

Annoying! :p It's so that you never cross your hands over and you never take your hands off the steering wheel.

Oh I see!! Yes, that's they way they teach you, we call it feeding the wheel through. You just do what they teach you to pass the test, then once you have passed, that's when the REAL learning starts. You'll be fine, I'm sure.

Bea

I was driving our car yesterday (with dad teaching) and the push and pull steering was pointless cause with power steering you just don't turn the wheel enough to make it worth doing. :p The hilarious thing was that the indicator in our car is on the right of the steering wheel (normal side for Aussies) and the indicator in the driving school car is on the right (backwards). So when i first got in the driving school car i kept flicking the wind screen wipers on, but then i got used to it. But then i get back in our car and i start flicking the wind screen wipers on again. :p Switching back and forth is going to confuse me soooo badly!

Laura

How come the indicators are different on each car  I would be doing the same thing as you, how confusing that must be.

They can be on different sides here as well. I remember once I was out driving and I had my son in the car, somebody cut me up so I went to flash my lights at them and put on the wipers! My son said "Well done mum, that'll teach them!" :D:D
