Hi everyone I'm new here and I just bought myself a pied today from some guy who was mistreating him. He's a bit nippy but overall I'm showing him that I'm the "master" and he's ALREADY gotten better with me. He's quite affectionate at times. he wants his head pet and he loves to play with my hair and some coins. He'll take a coin over and drop it on my cats head just to bug her hahahahaaa it's soooooooo cute!
Eventually I would love to get him a friend, but I'm worried about breeding, aggression, all that stuff. I don't even know if he....IS A HE. lol... I'm still learning. Anywho I'm Jenn and my babies name is Bekham

:)Hi everyone..I live in New Zealand and I am new to this thread. Lots of great reading and beautiful photos. I have 2 breeding budgies plus 5 x (2 month) old beautiful babies and she is sitting on some more. My problem is that I am looking after my nieces cockatiel's which was sitting on eggs now she's not. I got the first one she laid out and candled it which looks fertile so I put it with my budgie who is sitting on it. Should I do that?? just a bit worried if it hatches what her reaction will be and if the other chicks will all be OK. The other cockatiel eggs are stone cold 4 in total. 3 where infertile and one was fertile. Is it alright to leave this egg with my budgie....She is a good mum, would she feed the cockatiel chick do you think??? please help....Robyn

Hi. to all, I found this site after putting in Cockatiels in the search bar on Google and find it absolutely great. I just love all the information and photo`s I have just a week ago after a long search got a baby Tiel of now just 18 weeks old.My partner had a tiel "Jimjam Duvet" and I took her on ov er a year ago as she was left on her own all week as he was away on business. She was a wonderfull companion and I was devastated when she died my partner was given her as a present after she was found flying around on friends property and as they had a parrot thought it better to rehome her.We think she was 13 to 14 years old.So now we have Maddie as we were told at the pet shop it is a girl. We take the shops word for this tho how do we tell. Jimjam Duvet used to lay eggs periodically so we guessed she was female.(Bless her)I am trying to get her to come to me but she is very nervous and I give her treats to encourage her to be friendly. She is coming to the front of the cage now and I can put my hand up to her.Only after a week so quite pleased with this result.Any advice would be gratefully received.:)

Hello Wend. Welcome! At 18 weeks it is difficult to tell the sex of a bird. There are markings that are specific to males and to females but at this age they all have the same markings. Only as they mature can you differentiate between the sexes. However it's more difficult with Pieds. Behavior is the best indicator of the sex of your bird. Males will be very vocal and that may have already started. Between 3 and 4 months young males find their voices and start chattering with great regularity. So if your bird is still quiet chances are it IS a female.

Hello there we are new here. Let me first introduce us, and tell you a little bit about our cockatiels. My name is Joani and Hedwig is my whitefaced pearl male cockatiel. Joey is my husband and his birds name is Albus Dumbledore "Al" and he is a pearl male. I tried to upload a couple of photos, but the pictures were too big. We've had our cockatiels for two weeks now. They were both handfed, but once we got Hedwig home he started to bite, but I've been working with him almost every day with click training that I picked up from Chet Womachs' videos, and he is doing very well with that now. Al is very curious, but he gets bored with the click training ... he will just walk right past the stick and the millet just to get to your shoulder. Anyways ... hello.

Hi Everyone,
My name is kathy and I go by Moonraven. I am presently looking for a cockatiel. We have 1 ringneck dove who is 21 years old, 2 canaries, 1 love bird and 1 pacific parrottlet. They are our featherd family. We also have 3 cats, 1 dog and 2 betas,
We had a long time ago 2 cockateils but they have passed over to the rainbow bridge.
I have been searching for breeders in the western NY area and haven't been lucky. Most are from either NYC or very close to it I don't want to buy from a pet store. They over charge and really don't pay much attention to them except to clean the cages and feed them. All my birds have come from breeders.
If anyone knows of a breeder in my area could you let me know.I live about 26 miles west of Rochester,NY
Hope to get to know all of you,
Kat

Hi everyone,
I am a new kid on the block. This is my first time in this forum and I do not know how to begin properly. So, please patient with me. At any rate, I have two tiels, named Bi and Bo, both hand-fed and well behaved. Bi is 6 months and Bo 2-1/2 years old. The problem is Bo used to sing and talk a lot but when Bi started talking, Bo stopped suddenly and I do not know how to get him to talk again. Can anybody out there explain to me the situation?

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to say hello from our family and two very vocal tiels on Whidbey Island, WA. Spiko is about 6 months and Sadie estimated to be about 1. We think we have two males, although Spiko is a young pied. Sadie looks like a regular grey male although there is one white spot on the back of his / her neck so I'm wondering if that also makes him / her pied and of unknown sex....

Anyway, they are wonderful pets and they make us laugh with all their antics and vocals.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice in this forum!

Good Afternoon All. I'm Jenny, I currently reside in Texas and am a mechanical Engineering student attending the University of Texas system.

I currently have two cockatiels. Bob, who is female and I believe her proper breed is Pied? She is pictured. She is 18 years old and starting to really show her age. She was purchased from a breeder when she was an infant, apparently pushed from the nest as a chick. She was hand raised and has a sweet attitude, though she likes to be center of attention.

The other is a newer addition to our family through a rescue in New Mexico. Her name is San, and she's a White Face cinnamon cockatiel. She was discarded on the side of an intersection with a few of her siblings in a box. The feathers around her neck are plucked, probably by her brothers under the stress of foster care. She caught my attention and thus I adopted her as a companion to my aging senior. San's age is unknown, but she is over the age of 10 for sure. She was not hand trained, but with Bob's help an a lot of patience, she's beginning to come around.

I joined this forum to spread my experience as an owner and to gather up other's experience to assist me with my new cockatiel. I hope to post much and have fun! See you around the forums!

Hi everyone!
I'm Mercy, I'm fifteen and new to this site.
My dad and I have three adult cockatiels(two hens and one cock), two chicks, with five more on the way. I'm very interested in any advice anyone can give me on how to take better care of my tiels.
We've just recently found out that one of our hens is a whiteface cinnamon pearl and are having a bit of trouble distinguishing our male's mutation and since they have two chicks and five eggs in the nest, we would like to be able to tell what the babies possible mutations and genders might be.
All advice and opinions will be greatly appreciated. :)

Hello! I have my very first Cockatiel. I got it Saturday from someone on Craigslist. I've never before owned a Cockatiel so I wasn't prepared for a bird that always wants to be near me, but I'm happy it likes me. I don't even know what kind it is or if it is a boy or girl, but it sure is one sweet bird. The previous owners said it was about 4 months old.

It has a pale pink beak & nose, brown eyes, it's face and crest is mostly light gray with a little yellowish color, it has faded orange cheeks and its body is light gray with white feathers along the edge of its wings. Its tail is speckled with white on top and there are white stripes on bottom with some yellow feathers there too and its feet are pink.

I'd sure love any tips from Cockatiel patrons- I'd like to learn how to get it to trust me where I can lay it on its back and I'd also like to potty train it. I'm starting that today. It willingly steps up and some times it begs to be picked up. It enjoys having its neck scratched and its head, but if it doesn't want to be touched it gets nippy, but even when it doesn't want to be touched it still wants to be near me so it will keep coming back to me if I put it up.

When it sits on my shoulder it likes to pull my earrings so I get to touch its wing if it pulls my earrings. I figure if it does something I don't like I should do something it doesn't like, but also something that will get it used to being touched. It also likes electrical cords and on the second day I couldn't get to it and so I said "No" loudly and its crest went straight up, but it left the cords alone like maybe it understood that it shouldn't touch them?

I'm not sure how to 'correct' a bird.

Also, do Cockatiels talk? This one started wolf-whistling the second day, but other than that it is very quiet. I kinda expected it to be noisier for some reason.

I'd love any comments, suggestions, advice, etc. I'd really like to keep it healthy and happy so that I can have it for a long long time.

Hi everyone. I just joined the forum, and it looks like it is going to be a fun and informative one.

My daughter received 2 cocktiels for her birthday (14th). We were told they are 10 years old, and are POSSIBLY a male and female. We have never owned cockatiels before this, so we are learning. My daughter, well, she is an animal lover and has set her sites on becoming a vet (has said this since she was in 1st grade). She loves to learn all there is about an animal, and has been trying to learn about hers since getting them but is getting discouraged. The one, lovingly dubbed Lady, had an injury when we got her. My daughter is now upset as Lady has opened this injury up. Hence, my search online for help.

I am going to post in another forum about the issue we are having.

But, I have 9 children, and we have had a variety of pets. They are not "animals" to us, they are an extension of our family.....more children. We are always busy here, either with work, sports, crafting, or our animals. Never a free or dull moment.

I look forward to learning about our pets, my daughter also, and getting to know everyone. Thanks.

Hello, I have had cockatiels for a year now and nearly got my outside aviary built (not really a carpenter!) I now have 8 - Pearl & Stirling & Cutie - I bought in a large cage with a pair of budgies & a Chinese Quail and the cage stunk of cigarette smoke - poor things. Pearl is a pearl female, Stirling her mate a grey and not sure what Cutie is. She/he is supposed to be a female but has a brighter yellow on the face and behaves very different to Pearl. Then I bought Alex from up north and he is a Cinnamon Pearl. We got Diamond a grey male and Kuto & Tashima a grey pair who bred last year. Found Diamond dead in the bottom of the cage middle of this year - not sure why. I bought Princess to go with Alex as thought Cutie was a girl! Not sure how old she is but no-one wants to pair with her! Lastly, Sophie I bought to pair with Cutie but now they look so alike I am wondering if Cutie is a girl after all!

Stirling & Pearl have finally laid eggs (been mating for quite a few months!) and I found 4 eggs under Stirling so not sure if they are due this week or next week.

Kuto & Tashima are due this Thursday 25 Nov with 3 eggs. This is their second clutch as the 2 chicks from 3 eggs died at 5 days after a very cold snap in the weather.

I found this forum as I have just joined the Budgies Forum and found it very helpful.

Hi Everyone,

my partner and I have had cockatiels for many years and originally started keeping them as a hobby but I would like to get into the breeding side of it now that we've had several clutches of babies (some we hand-reared and passed to family/friends and some kept in the aviary).

We lost all our original aviary stock due to some unknown 'person' (I won't call them what I usually do here LOL) got into the aviary while we were away overnight and let every single bird out of 3 different aviaries  but we managed to pick up 13 tiels from a lady that simply didn't have the time for them all anymore and now have 6 babies from 2 clutches to add to the brood. There is also another 3 eggs in a nesting box but I'm not hopeful of them hatching as I'm positive the hen that laid them is the same one that abandoned her clutch last season.

Hubby is into breeding native Australian parrots and we have 2 pair of Palehead Rosellas, 2 pair of Red Rumps, and a pair of Golden Mantle Rosellas on the way. We have a male Hooded Parrot that needs a partner, as well as 3 pairs of Zebra finches (2 nests with eggs) and a pair of Button Quails with a clutch of 8 eggs (yeah I know they aren't all natives but they do a good job cleaning up dropped seed LOL)

I found this forum when looking for information on mutations and I'm so glad I did, as I've already got a reasonable idea of what we have here now in regards to the tiels. I look forward to meeting everyone and sharing information while I learn more about these gorgeous birds :)

Hi! 25 years ago I had two cockatiels. Both were grown and already talked. One was hand tamed the other, not at all. Two days ago My son (17 yrs old) and I came home with Rio. The woman at the pet store said she thought he was a male, 6-9 months old. He had just arrived at the pet store earlier in the day so I'm sure the two moves in one day was tramatic. He sat still for the first day - moved around and started eating the second day. Today he let my son put his finger in the cage indefinitely and even put a claw on the finger. He gets very excited if he hears U tube videos of other tiels; comes alive and chirps. Otherwise, he is quiet, so far. I think Rio is doing great! I forgot how fun cockatiels could be and I find myself constantly going into my son's room and talking to him.

Hi everyone! I joined because I inherited my Mom's 2 cockatiels that were originally given to her atleast 15 years ago. Coto Rico is grey and Pretty Baby is yellow.
From all the research I've done they are both males. BUT, as of late Coto acts as if there is a pregnancy taking place. I thought that by joining there might be other tiel owners who have had this strange behavior. The large poops, the hiding in the box and rocking back & forth and looking a bit funky near the vent. We are completely puzzled.

:D Hello everyone, found the site out of nesessity! I have a beautiful female (we thought she was a he first) named Poncho who we found outside the school yard. No one claimed her and we fell in love with her! She is very loving and tolerant of our soon to be 2 year old malti poo. However we babysat my mom's pomeranian and i think that Poncho got stressed out. Then, at night i heard her thrashing around her cage. In the morning I found she had plucked out her flight feathers on her right wing. Poncho has never been clipped by us and we allow her to fly throughtout the house. She is now "grounded". Is this normal? She has never ever done this? Can anyone give me some advice....am in a small panic.

I'm thinking she probably had a "night fright". Cockatiels can get frightened in the nighttime by any noise, perhaps an approaching storm, or even hear an animal outside of the room they are sleeping in. I always cover my bird at night, and also leave a night light on in the room. It seems this is a possibility, and instead of plucking out her feathers, she may have thrashed around in the cage and simply lost them. Did you see any blood in the cage? Is she eating normally and are her "poops" the right consistency? You might consider taking her to a vet for a "check-up"! Hope all goes well with Poncho!

lovelyolivia, Thank you for responding. :)Now that I have calmed down I have counted all her missing flight feathers; she has lost a total of 5! She is eating and still happy to move around only a little freaked out that she can't fly to her furthest perch. Her poop is just a little more watery than usual. Will take her to vet if she plucks any more or looks weak. There was no blood in the cage, or on her feathers that she lost. I've been looking up molting, but have not read about the flight feathers on just one side? Thanks again..glad I found this site:D

Hiya,

I help my Dad in his aviary and he has recently purchased 4 cockatiels, 2 breeding pairs. He is midway through putting them into an outdoor aviary.

He already has another aviary for canaries and quails which breed. Also he used to breed Zebra Finches.

I just want to say hello to everyone.

Hi! I'm brand new to the forum. I currently have one male pied cockatiel just under a year old and 2 parakeets. About 13 years ago I had 2 very sweet cockatiels that loved to be with my husband and I and would sit on our shoulders, give kisses, play in our hair and were just such a joy. Well, we ended up having to move and I gave them to a friend. I missed them so much. I finally decided to get another cockatiel not too long ago and made the huge mistake of getting one that was not tame at all! When we first got him, the guy at the store brought him to me and he sat just fine on my finger and seemed calm enough, but a bit nervous which I thought was normal. Well, after having him at home, he is really not getting much better. We take him out a lot and try to socialize him, but he bites, hard, and hisses a lot. He even hisses sometimes when he is in his cage and we are talking to him. I have his cage close by my computer so that I am near him a lot to try to get him used to my presence. We also have a stand that he will perch on outside of his cage that he will spend time on. So, now I am thinking on getting a baby cockatiel that has been hand fed and is tame. I was hoping that maybe a tame one would help my untamed one trust us and make it a bit easier to tame him. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions? I think it would be great to have two tamed cockatiels again!

Hi everyone...I came across this forum while looking for ways to take care of our new tiel. We have never had one before and sometimes seem at a loss as to what to do. Buster (our tiel) is about 1 yr. old and was not very well cared for although thankfully he is healthy. We have had him now for about 2 weeks. We take him out of his cage and are able to handle him but we have a very busy household with 3 dogs and 2 cats. Which seems to make him nervous when they get close to his cage. He likes to sit on the top of his cage so we got him a play gym. How do we get him used to it? He refuses to go near it or any new toys we got him. His cage had 1 toy and 1 bell in it when we got him. We can't get him to eat any fresh fruit or veggies either. I just want to make sure I am doing everything I can for him so he can be a well adjusted bird. Any thoughts?

Good evening, everyone. My husband and I went looking for a cockatiel forum because our tiel added an odd behaviour to his already strange repertoire. More on that elsewhere.

Our cockatiel is a lovely grey fellow named Joscelin (Jossie for short) who has a yellow crest and vivid orange cheekspots. He's about eight years old and has a deep and abiding fondness for nachos.

Hi, my name is Angie and I'm new here as well. I just bought my first cockatiel last weekend. He/she is a normal grey and only 3 1/2 months old. Unfortunately he has a bacterial infection and has not been eating solid food since I brought him home. So, now I'm hand feeding him with a paste made from harrison's pellets. He is doing okay, but I am hoping to get through this stage quickly. I did call the person I bought him from and she did offer to take him back, but I'm already attached and want to make sure he'll be okay. He/she is very sweet, loves to sit on my shoulder and cuddle up into my neck. I do own lovebirds, but keep them in a separate room. I must admit though that the cockatiel has stole my heart!

Hello everyone,

I'm 22, from west coast Canada. My fiancee referred me to this site after showing me how helpful it is. She loves animals! We recently got a cockatiel, Hermes, and he's the cutest little bird I've ever seen! I can't wait to see if he can talk!

I'm looking forward to learning what I can about cockatiels, and this forum will definitely help enhance my knowledge of them. I look forward to hearing all about the little guys!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi, I am glad we found your forum, it looks Great! I use to own a White faced Pearl, who sadly passed away in "06". Yesterday we went out and bought another tiel, and wanted to join a tiel forum I am so glad I found this one.

This is my first time using this site and since I am in the company of other tiel lovers I know I shall be using it often. This is my story on my tiel experience. We got our first tiel in June of 2008. My son loves birds and had been wanting one for a very long time. I was hesitant; I was somewhat cautious around birds as I startle easily and I didn't want to be pecked! Anyway, he had seen pictures of whiteface tiels and really liked them so we looked all over central Illinois and found a wonderful store in Champaign, IL called SAILFIN that had whiteface tiels at that time. We went over there and they had several young whitefaces. They are very careful with their birds; you cannot just buy one and take it home-you spend time with your choice in the store and staff works with you for several weeks to educate you and work on your new relationship. They feel you don't pick the bird-the bird picks you. Anyway, my son (calling himself the actual bird owner) picked a young, unknown gender whiteface and we named the tiel Sydney, not knowing the gender. Sydney had no problems riding home with us 45 miles in the car. We bought a traveling cage and he walked around and chirped several times. To make a long story short, we found out from our avian veterinarian that Sydney was a male as he was quite the whistler and singer. He soon learned "Reveille" from my husband whistling it and with his cage housed in our son's room at night, he would whistle "Reveille" at about 6:30 in the morning to wake up our son. He spent most of his time out of the cage and flew about the house. We chose to let his wings grow out because he loved flying so much. Sydney really bonded to me and spent most of his time perched on me. He was a sweetheart and would gently nibble on my lip and give me kisses. When I would come home he would cry out his greeting. He loved to help me do dishes and laundry and had to inspect everything. We all loved him, but I had the special bond with him. In April, 2010, my husband had Syd with him and walked out into the garage to close th door forgetting Sydney was on his shoulder. Our little whiteface flew right out the garage door and over the roof of our neighbor's home. We immediatley went out looking for him; calling and whistling for him, but it was getting dark and we had no luck. I cried most of the night and got up before dawn and made posters. By dawn I was stapling posters to the telephone poles at the top and bottoms of the streets around us, calling Sydney. He responded on the next street over from us and I saw him flying and circling around. We ran to the area and got around the tree he landed in with me calling him and shaking a goldfish cracker bag as he loved his goldfish crackers. He responded several times, however, we could not see him. After about 30 minutes he suddenly flew from that tree and circled around the area several minutes. At one point he looked like he was flying right at me, but veered off. He was very high and I think he did not know how to come down or land. We searched for days, posting on the web at various sites, distributing posters, walking and walking and calling him for blocks around our neighborhood. We put his cage out and even moved it into the back yard of a house where someone thought they saw him. The last time I heard anyone say they saw him was about a month after he flew off. A woman two streets away thought she saw him sitting on a tree branch at the edge of a wooded area where a bike trail cut through. I have never given up, totally-I still call for Sydney when I take walks. It has been a year and a half and I periodically post ads in the local lost and found classifieds and keep one up constantly on Craigslist and 911parrotalert.com. I grieve for him and cry when I think of what could have happened to him. I hope someone has him; at least he would be in a home, being fed rather than out there with weather issues and predators. A couple of months after we lost Sydney I visited SAILFIN again, wanting another cockatiel as we were planning on getting a second one to keep Sydney company. A young whiteface pearl wolf whistled at me, climbing up and down the bars of his cage. He was quite a bit larger than Sydney and very flashy looking. We brought him home 2 weeks later and named him (Max)imus Squawkus as he was pretty noisy. Max also bonded to me, however, he was much more amorous than Sydney. I had to move him off my arms and hands as he had just one thing in mind! He also loved to strut and was quite the proud male with his chest puffed out and his wings held out from his body. He wanted to ride on our heads, but we would put him down on our arm or shoulder. He also learned songs, however, he would come up with his own version after whistling the first part. He would whistle and then cock his head for you to whistle the same thing back. Then he would repeat the tune, but add to it and want you to copy it. That was his little game. If I took a nap and when I went to bed I would wheel his cage into our room next to the bed and he would quiet down immediately. He was friendly with my husband and son, but very bonded to me. He was a very strong flyer even after his wings were clipped. About one year after we got Max he was in the living room with me and he was playing with a toy on the bookcase at the far end of our living room. My husband was leaving and I had to tell him something so I hesitated, looking at Max and thought he was preoccupied, so ran to the front door and sliding through quickly to shout out to my husband from the front porch. As I slipped back in I heard Max calling out several times. I got in the living room and could not find him. He had flown out the small area of the door as I slipped through. I was hysterical. Again, we went through the same process as 14 months earlier with Sydney. Posters distributed to each home for several blocks around us, lost and found classifieds, web sites, calling shelters and vets, but to no avail. My son saw him twice in the neck 6 weeks right in our yard as I had put out his cage and birdfeed. He had flown off before I got outside. I haven't seen him for several months now, though I continue to look. I grieve for my birds and think of them every day. I pray and pray and call for both of them, but to no avail. Now autumn is here and the trees are shedding their leaves. I think of Sydney and Max and wonder what has happened to them-and I am besieged with guilt and tears as I can't bear to think they are quite probably deceased by now. I cannot quit thinking of them and their endearing ways and how much I love them. I love cockatiels now and have thought of getting one or two more, but then I feel guilty as I don't want to betray my lost boys. I would love to hear from other cockatiel lovers who could respond to my sad story. Could my two birds live through the seasons of central Illinois-do they move off from the area they were lost in? I need support as my husband is impatient with me and tells me to "get over it-they are gone for good"

I just got my grandmother's 2yr. old cockaitiel and I don't know much about them. She was laying an egg about every 3 day's but I took the bottom of her cage off and put her on the table she stopped going to the bottom of her cage because the table was in her way and she could'nt get her claw's around the grating. She than started to lay her egg's while pearched and thay were dropping to the bottom and breaking! Also she is losing alot of feather's and seem's to be sneezing. Also I think there is somthing wrong with one of her claw's because somtimes she perches one one foot! All this is making me very sad and I can't afford to take her to a vet right now sombody please help!

ok relax first and take a deep breath :)

1, sitting on one foot once in awhile is normal, theyre just resting their foot.

2, do not take her eggs away, she will keep laying them to replace the ones lost. leave them with her for 28 days or until she gives up on them. Make sure shes getting a lot of calcium. make sure she has a cuttlebone, and if she will eat veggies, give her brocholli and kale. she should get veggies in her diet, so be sure to take a look at the diet and health section for tricks on how to get her to eat her veggies and what food is safe for cockatiels. make sure she has no nest site (sleeping huts, tents, etc).

3, cover her cage for 12-14 hours at night. this will trick her into thinking its winter and not a good time to lay eggs. that should reduce her hormones in a matter of a few weeks.

4. as for the sneezing, how frequently? and shes losing feathers, meaning shes molting. cockatiels are dusty birds, she may be sneezing from being irritated from her own dust. spray her with warm water from a mist bottle. it may help a lot :)

Hi, everyone. I'm new to the forum and I just purchased a new bird to my already existing flock. I have two eclectus: one female Strawberry (who is the only one that is untamed except the new addition), and one male Kiwi (who is very tame he flies to u know matter where u r in the house). He is very loveable. I also have two cockatiels: the male Snickers is a big love bug he cuddles and gives so many kisses, the new addition is supposed to be a female (going to get her dna tested as soon as test comes in the mail. She is not so sweet needs a lot of training. She likes to bite and hang out behind your head. She might also like males better. I played with her for an hour and then my husband played with her for a second and she was nicer to him than me. I thought it was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing.

Hello all, I'm not even sure I'm posting this right so please let me know if I goofed. I got my first teil about 5 weeks ago. She was originally purchased at a Petco by my neighbor. I babysat for her for 2 weeks and fell in love with her. When I heard from my other neighbors that her new owner was putting her in the bathroom in the dark because she made too much noise, and that he would poke at her in the cage and yell at her I flipped. I talked him into letting me buy her from him and thankfully he agreed. Owning a bird wasn't what he thought it would be I guess. I've owned parakeets before, years ago but this is my first tiel. She's supposed to be about a year old. So far so good although I don't think she's going to talk for me anytime soon. She seems to listen, and to understand a few things I say, but nothing but whistles and screeches back. That's ok, although I do wish she would sing a little more. Maybe someday. I'm going very slowly with her cause I think she has a lot of forgetting to do. I'm also thinking of adopting a couple of budgies for her to visit. I thought she would be a little more comfortable if she could hear other birdies after coming from a pet shop. They'll be in their own cage in the same room, but across the room. Will that work? She seems to find my cat curious but isn't afraid of her. They are never alone without the cage between them and the kitty just ignores her. She's already learned that if I'm going to leave the apartment, her door gets closed. She's learned to go home. So anyway I'd be really interested in hearing from anyone who's adopted an older bird. It sounds like they have more issues than the youngsters. Thanks for letting me vent.

Welcome to the forum:D and thats awesome of you to take her away from a bad situation! Im sure shed love some budgie friends to chat to but as Lperry82 says below budgies tend to bully tiels so if you want her to have a friend to play with a tiel would be best. Females dont really whistle or talk thats a male bahaviour, a few talented females can whistle though. Would love to see some pics.

Hi, everyone! I joined recently and posted once, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. I am a cockatiel lover who is currently without a cockatiel as both of my cockatiels got out (separate times) and flew off. Sydney was 2 and half when he got out on 4/16/2010. Max was only one and half years old when he got out June 5, 2011 and flew off. In both cases I posted online in lost and founds, both local, state and national and I check them several times weekly. I put up posters on telephone poles on neighborhood streets, posters in stores and veterinary offices plus humane society and shelter and still walk the streets, calling and whistling for them. Max was seen as recently as last month, still in our neighborhoold, but he doesn't respond to my calling his name or whistling his favorite songs. Sydney was seen for about a month after he flew off about 3 blocks from our home, but he was very near a large wildlife area. It is now getting down in the lower 30's nightly and sometimes during day and I don't know if cockatiels can survive central illinois winters. I cannot stop thinking about my beautiful, beloved boys and grieve for them. I feel so guilty for them getting out. Both of them flew freely in our home and spent alot of time outside their cages. Sydney's wings grew out, but Max had his kept clipped and he still flew. He is larger than Sydney and was always a little more wild acting. Both bonded to me though were affectionate with my husband and son. I miss them terribly and get very upset when I think about what could have happened to them. I pray that they are alive and in loving homes with someone if I never find them. Both are whitefaces and very beautiful, sweet and playful. Both are great whistlers, but never talked. We named Max Maximus Squawkus because he loved to make all sorts of sounds...loudly. Max was also very horny most of the time and could get very excited with my hands and pillows! Sydney didn't ever do that, but he could get very loud, also and had a particularly loud sound we called his terydactyl call. I just want to get to know other tiel lovers and get some feedback on any type of thing I haven't tried to do to find my birds. And...should I get a new cockatiel or even two new ones. (even thinking about it makes me feel like I am betraying my lost boys).

Welcome to the forum....

@Westendellen i really hope they come back :(
Is there any chance you could take the cage outside somewhere high up and hope that they go in at night or when they are hungry, im sure somebody did that on the forum.
If you want more don't feel bad, you never know the sound of another cockatiel might help.
(My girl lucky always rushes to me when i play other tiels on youtube)
Im keeping my fingers crossed for you

Hi, I'm mostly new to this board. I received much help - thank you - when my bird was sick back in September. He survived, recovered, and is normal.

I'm doing computer stuff this morning. The tiels, Max and Gandolf, are chirping and talking away, practicing all their whistles, their "pretty birds" and their version of jingle bells which we humans have been teaching to them, while I'm up here trying to get stuff done. I soooo enjoy listening to them, such a beautiful sound!

I also lurked a long time ago to learn about toys and cages. Thanks for this board. It is awesome.

Welcome to the forum Joy :D Your bird is so handsome! He is definately a boy, he has the full yellow male face. During their first moult the males get the yellow faces and also lose their tail bars, females have greyer faces and keep the tail bars. Also whistling is mainly a male behaviour, very few females can whistle.

Hi I am Jennifer and I am new to this and have never joined a forum. My husband bought me two paired tiels for Christmas and they mate constantly. I got a nestbox and it had a perch on the front so we mounted it inside. Once I realized it would be too difficult to properly clean the box as often as I should once they hatch, I took it down and put it at the bottom of the cage on top of a wood block. Both of them are so upset, screaming and have not re entered. I think she might be ready to lay. I put millit on the entrance but so far no luck. What should I do?

Welcome to the forum... I would move the nest box back where it is as you dont need to clean the box after they hatch, its more healthier for them.

HI I am a newbie and postedregarding concerns on my nest box. I moved it so that I would have better access to it once the eggs hatched. I have been reading tons and was under the thinking that the box should be emptied and cleaned daily after hatching. I moved it from hanging inside large cage to bottom of cage on wooden box for a little height off floor.
Is it true we don't clean often? If I put it back where it was I can't open the top at all because I have a domed top, and I can't attach outside, either.

Welcome to the forum! Yes its true you shouldnt have to clean it often, the parents dont poop in the nest box and the babies will poop around the edges and the presence of poop in the nest box helps with the babies immune systems. BUT you should put the nest box somewhere where you can open it as you will have to check the nestbox frequently to make sure the babies are in good health and developing normally.

hello everyone:) . First time here . im from norway and couldnt find any sites likes this in norwegian , so this was great . I got a little cockatiel who i think is a year or so , they said so in the petstore . We got him 3-4 weeks ago (not really tamed yet) .I dont even know if its a boy ,think maybe its a girl . The women in the petstore said we couldnt tell yet cus she was a bit to young , but of what i have read you can tell on her stripes on the tale that its a girl . Is that true? is it much difference between boy and girl in their personality?

Welcome! If the bird is a year or older you can safely tell the sex of the bird by tail bars( except pieds because males can keep tail bars longer). See all young tiels have tail bars but when they go through their first moult between 6-12 months old the females keep the tail bars and the males moult them out and get solid tail feathers. It would be helpful if you could post a picture of your bird a because there may be other visual indications of gender( e.g male pearls lose their pearls, or male greys get the yellow face mask). Males will beak bang, do heart wings, and whistle( this explains those behaviours, http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/behavior.php).

Gidday everyone,
I've this baby cockateil at the moment that has a swollen crop. seems to be full of air. Just want some advice before I go ahead and try to suck it out with a syringe. No food in it. could be a viral/bacterial as parents have been feeding all babies ok. Parents have an addiction to museli bars and perhaps the youghet has done this. All other chicks fine. never had this problem before. Anyone with any suggestions I'd be greatful. thanks:eek:

I would suggest that you start a new Thread with your title being Swollen Crop. It will generate more responses. Also, do a search on swollen crop and see what threads come up for helpful information besides. :)

Also please post some pixs. Your description tells very little, whereas a pix (photo) helps to see what the problem is.

I'm glad I came across this site. I look forward to learning more about cockatiels. I have had a pet tiel before named Cookie so I love cockatiels. Recently my friend and I started breeding cockatiels along with several other kinds of birds. We have had 6 babies so far, 2 of which we handfed. The most recent 4 I am hand taming right now. The 2 boys have learned to step-up and will sit on my finger. But the 2 girls are still so scared and won't even let me pick them up. The boys are no where near comfortable yet but they will step on my finger if relaxed. I'm trying to get them tame and trained because I have someone who wants 2 of them and really hate to give them untamed birds. I realize it takes time for them to trust you and I shouldn't rush it. I will just tell the person who wants them what to do to gain their trust, as they will probably be skiddish with a new person. Anyway, we have all kinds of tiels, greys, pearls, lutinos, cinnamons, pied, white face, white-face lutinos, white-face pearl that I named whitefeather(her mate flew away so I have a special attachment to her), DYC, etc. We are having trouble with getting fertilized eggs though. They lay tons of eggs but we only have 1 pair that actually have babies. We also have conures, lovebirds, quakers, finches, doves, and parakeets. I'm responsible for cleaning all the cages each week(around 30 cages). I haven't counted how many birds we have. Maybe I'll count them this week so I can tell you all how many tiels we have total. They're all so sweet(not tame but love attention) and I really enjoy them. So I am new to breeding and hope it is a success. We will see.

Orchis 221, please copy and paste your post and post it in the introduction or cockatiel talk section. And...it sounds like you might want to spend some time reading past postings in the Breeding section and mutations section.

Actually the search box (on the memu bar at the top of the forum) is a very useful thing for new members to use to do search of things of interest before posting.l if you don't find or answer or have additional postings you can start a thread.

and once you get your count of cockatiels you can click on UserCP at the top of the forum and fill out your profile.
