About a year ago, three parrots were stolen from a Petland store in the southern end of Calgary, Alberta (where I live). A week ago another three parrots (an Amazon, an African Grey, and a Pionus) were stolen from three different locations in Calgary... the third being the store where I bought Sawyer two weeks ago!
I didn't really think much of the thefts of last year, but this time it hits just a little bit closer to home than the first time. I'm pretty sure I'm at least acquainted with the parrot that was stolen from the location close to my house -- I like to visit all of the birds there. I'm guessing it was the African Grey because that store didn't have Amazons or Pionuses at the time (though they do have a very beautiful red and blue Eclectus Parrot). Probably going to find out later this week when I go back to buy some cat food.
The grey was in the cage right next to the Cockatiels. (Actually, you can see him behind the rope perch in this picture (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v445/peppsy/Sawyer/IMG_1278.jpg).) I sort of wonder if he gave them a hard time, though. He tried to take a chunk out of my hand when I was there. :p
At the same time, it does make me sad. The welfare of the birds being the first reason. Who knows whether or not the thieves have any idea how to care for them? The second reason being that Petland puts a lot of trust out there to have their animals in open pens so that people can interact with them. This is probably going to change soon. :(
