Yes that's Mr. Maggie, he is gender confused, lol. I didn't have the heart to change his name after 5 years so I added the Mr!

If Maggie is 5 years it's very unusual to still have pearls!

That's what caused all of the confusion for his previous family. He is very heavily pearled, it is rare but does happen. If he was female he would have more grey in his face. Believe me it was very confusing when he first came to live with us. He is the most vocal of all our tiels and the only one that speaks clearly too. A genuine suck!

It is always tricky to tell with a Pied. You can't rely on indicators like grey on the face with this mutation at all. The behavior you describe sure sounds male. In that case you have a rare bird indeed. You should get him a heavily Pied WF hen and make babies!!!. With him carrying the Pearl gene all the female offspring would be pearls. He's gorgeous!

He is a beautiful bird and if he were younger I would breed him for sure! He loves playing with the nestboxes ect... but he is approximately 5-6 years old, too old to breed I would think. Also more of a family pet. A joy to have around though!

Males can breed up to the age of 18.

I didn't know that, I thought it was best to retire them after 5 maximum. It is something to consider for the future I suppose. I want to see how things go with ButterBall and Stella first. That way I will at least be able to foster his chicks to them if needed. I'm not sure how good of a dad he would be, he relies on me for everything!:p
