Hi!
I found this forum while hunting down more information on my birds and trying to find out if pink legs mean anything genetics wise or not. I have a beautiful girl, w/f pearl w/pink legs and her new mate w/f split for pied - believed also to be a pearl though I'm not 100%. They are busy taking care of their baby now :p
Outside of the tiels, I am the proud mom of a pair of female budgies, 1 lionhead dwarf lop, 5 cats, 25 rats(I'm a rat breeder), 3 fish tanks and one super teen aged daughter.
We all live in Holland (the country, not Michigan) except for the kid who is currently studying in the states with her pawpaw.
I'm hoping to gain loads of info here and I hope someone can clear up the pink legged thing
Thanks in advanced!
Heather

Welcome!! Yes! Pink legs mean something. It could indicate Cinnamon. That is a lighter color than a gray. It's more like tan or light brown. I have a Cinnamon Pearl who has pink feet. Even babies or 10 days will show color in their legs. Sometimes the pied mutation will have pink legs depending on where the bird is effected by the pied gene. I have a baby with one pink toe thanks to the pied gene. Lutino also has pink legs but that is a yellow bird and not what you have described. If you could post a pic of your girl I'm sure we could help to identify her mutation.

Stormy is in the foreground, Sergeant is behind her -
History on her is I went to a bird show a year ago looking for a parrotlet and while wondering around found a room full of canaries and tiels. This particular girl keep doing the 'pick me' dance whenever she spotted us. I was given a lot of details on her when I bought her and if my dutch was better I could have understood more - like the fact I was in the breeding section of the show lol. I was just too happy to find a bird who picked me. She was 18 months old at the time, parent reared and grew up in an outdoor aviary. Not tame as I soon found out. We got over that bit though. End of July/first august she laid a clutch of eggs, replaced 2 that broke and sat them clear into Oct. After thinking it all over carefully we made the choice to get a male. Be cause I know there is tons to this whole genetics game from rat breeding I wanted to keep it simple and get a w/f male.
I looked online and a breeder down the street had a w/f male, 18 months old, proven breeder, parent reared/non plucker(found that bit out when I bought him). I had wanted to start with a young bird but hubby was like get that one. I've had him a little over a month now. Thankfully he'd been recently vet checked since Stormy had an accident with her first clutch of eggs, old and weak I think.
I follow the breeders advice with hubby's prodding and put them together. Nov 1 Cricket was born. (tried to attach pics - I hope it works)http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n300/BlossomsBounty/Stormy/DSCF2093.jpg

Well your Male looks like a Normal Whiteface but since your baby is a pearl he either has the pearl gene or he is a Pearl. Males lose their pearling from between 6 months and a year. Your female looks like a Whiteface Pearl but I see the pink legs! If she is a lighter shade than the male (Brown to tan) I would say Cinnamon Whiteface Pearl I really don't see much in the way of pied markings. Colors are sometimes hard to tell in photos. I'm curious. Did they hatch that baby without a nest box?

Nope, they had those eggs in the nest box. First one turned up before I expected it (they got to business very quick). Placed it in the nest box, 5 more joined. I had an accident with the nest box and though none broke Cricket was the only one to survive it.
Here is Sergeant's backside - I'm hoping it will molt out to full white one day *always hopeful* - he is about 20 months old now.

He will never molt out full white. He has his mature markings now. If he had been a pearl he would have lost all of his speckled feathers and replaced them with the solid color you see now. So a pearl male will look like a normal WF usually by the time they are 1 year. I do see he has some pied in him. Otherwise the white mask wouldn't extend to the spots on the back of his head.

Darn - I was hoping those little gray spots on the back of his head would fill in - make him look like a bald eagle. Thought maybe their markings would mature along with them the same as my parrot's did. Shucks!!
Either way he is a great bird, laid back, non aggressive and he listens to his wife like a real man should! He's come around so much it's hard to believe he had to be chased around with a bird net just last month.
