okay so when i got Petrie i was told that he was a Normal grey cockatiel. But from pictures iv looked at on the web the males have dark gray feathers with white wing covers. well my Petrie's grey is a light color and the white wing patches seem to be outlined in yellow. is this normal or is he a different mutation of cockatiel.
heres some pictures hope they help. hes eating sprouts in it for the first time.

He looks like Jasper and Squeak, they are light pieds. (gray and white on the back of head)
Probably more safer to take the toothpick out of there too in case he decides to chew the sharp bit off.

He is a normal grey Split to pied
the Split to pied shows up as the white "tick" Marks on the back of their head means they are split to pied - not that they are pied.
the normal grey color can vary in how light or how dark it is
here is mine normal grey Split to pied (and lutino)

Ooh I was wrong.
My 2 boys must be split to pied then, because they have exactly the same markings as the original posters 'tiel.

So what would be the difference between a Light Pied and say, a Silver or Platinum??

If they're not split to pied then, they have to be light pied. They show only very little pied.
--------
While other mutations follow predictable pattern and common rules for their markings this mutation follows none of the rules. It is a non specific lack of melanin that can occur anywhere on it's body. It can be as varied as just a few light (pied) feathers. This is called a Light Pied.
My Jasper, who is a light pied:

The Silver is much like the wild type Gray but is much lighter.
Silver:

Platinum is a sex-linked recessive mutation of extreme dilution. They appear a smoky silvery grey colour with their primary flight and tail feathers usually being darker than the rest of their body.
Platinum eyes can vary from bright red to plum when they hatch, but they usually turn dark after about 1-2 weeks. Beak, feet, toenails, legs are a pale beige colour.

There is much debate on the subject of pieds. If the spots on the back of the head means split or is it light pied. I don't take the work of the endless sites out there who can say whatever they please and claim it as gospel truth. I read a paper by a Phd. who said that Pied differs from other recessive mutations in that a single parent will result in babies that have pied traits. He says they are Pieds but the gene is only expessed in small amounts.
