I know Pied is not a sex linked gene so either parent can carry it
I also know there are 2 for sure ways to know when a bird is split to pied
The "tick" (thumb print) on the back of their head
a white nail when all others are dark
BUT what if your bird has neither and you end up with Babies Split to pied,
Is there any other "signs" that a bird is split to pied?
I bred Sun Dance and Goldie last year, and one of their babies(that i can visually tell) is Split to white face pied
BUT I don't know who he got it from
Neither Sun Dance(male) Nor Goldie have the "tick/Thumb print)
I don't see any light/white colored nails on Goldie- but I'm going to try to get a better look today - she doesn't hold still at all!
and all Sun Dance's toes are dark - he is Missing ONE toe nail, but I'm pretty sure it too was dark I'll have to look again but I think there is a tiny (and i do mean tiny) there is a bit of a nail left but it's hard to see with it being Tiny
which made me curious if there was any other ways to visually tell which is split to pied
Right now I do have them set up with different partners - only Sun Dance is with a Jill who is Silver Pied
and Goldie is with Bart who is Split to pied
So that's not going to help me any to figure out which one it is
I know LITTLE about mutations so it started sounding like giberish as I kept reading...sorry...not your fault..mine.
I know Bbay is split to pied due to three little yellow feathers on the back of her neck...I'm sure the others will have a better answer then mine...lol

lol it's okay, when i first got into gentics and mutations it was all foreign to me and i only read about the first several words any one posted about until i got to understanding it a bit more
The "tick" mark on the back of their head Is what the one Baby has, when he was younger i thought it was just from the pearls because he is a pearl, but now the pearls are pretty much all the way gone he's got a few specks left over here and there, an that big ole "tick" mark is still there but out of all the babies he's the only one with it,
So confusing - But yet in a weird way it interests me So i get intrigued to find out lol

The pied gene from what i've read and been told is a great hider and can show up with no indicators at all in either parent

I'll have to get better pics of their babies feet, none of the pics i have show them very well and I'll attempt to get a good shot of Goldie and Sun Dance's Feet as well
Right now my batteries are on charge, so it'll be a little bit.

first of all... for Goldie and Sundance to have pearls and whitefaces...
Sundance is pearl or split pearl
Goldie is also split whiteface
the yellow babies (all) are also split whiteface
the one with the tick mark shows he/she´s split pied...
even one toe half dark.. one flight feather... one rump feather...

from what I read Pied can be a dominant recessive gene. that would explain why you can get Pied babies that appear to be pied even from parents who don't. If their parents had that kind of Pied gene they would definitely be split for it and there may be no outward indicators. According to the paper I read on this type of genetic inheritance even a tick mark is a pied. Just a very light pied. This would explain why in a pair where only one parent had the tick marks all the babies inherited them. I have 2 pairs like that. It can't just be by chance that all 9 offspring got the ticks.

they had 2 clutches last season out of 2 clutches there were a total of 9 babies Only the Male Pearl has the tick mark .
I'm just going to have to pair them with non pied, non related birds :) to figure out who is carrying the pied
It's so my records are accurate, It doesn't really matter to me who it is, won't change how I like my birds or anything :D - I just like to keep accurate records :)
