I was wondering if some aussies could give me their recipes for birdie bread...i found the basic one bea does....and i find i get confused by the ingredients from Canadian and American members! if u ahve a recipe u think is good and can tell me the base ingredient as opposed to a brand or other name for it that would work too!! thanks in advance!
I posted a recipe a while ago- can't find the link right now though-do a search if you get a chance (im at work)

I used Bea's recipe too!
When it came to the 1 cup of veggies, I put in:
Mustard seeds (the one you get in the spice section of the supermarket)
Linseed (I get it from the health section of our supermarket, it's a Woolworths)
Sweet Potato
Parsley
Green Chilli (fresh ones from the produce section)
Millet
Crushed Almonds (I just chopped them myself, just whole almonds from the shop)
Fennel (the bulb rather than the greens, but I added the greens to their salad that night)
Carrot
Popping Corn (I crushed what I put in the mix, and decorated the surface with some kernals)
Lentils (soaked brown ones)
Chick Peas (soaked)
Quinoa (it's a grain, I got it from the health food section of Woolworths but it's hard to find in Australia, it's also sold in health stores. It cooks like rice, and I cooked it before I added it)
I used apple juice rather than water or anything else.
I blended everything in the food processor so they couldn't pick out the veggies they liked, or avoid them altogether. Because it was basically liquid I had to increase the amount of 'bread' ingredients to compensate. Once I'd blended the veggies I added the bread mix and mixed it all together in the processor so it would be even. Then I baked it, it didn't take the same amount of time as Bea's recipe because our oven is fanforced and cooks freakishly fast.
Those are all really easy to find in Aussie supermarkets, except perhaps the quinoa and the fennel. I didn't know about quinoa until Sue told me and it's only just started stocking in the supermarket (it's ridiculously expensive, I think it was 7 bucks for 250g or so). They LOVE the bread and eat it all, so I know they're getting all their veggies.

thats what i want!! they make me worry so much...they turn their beaks up at the beans/rice and vegies i lovingly cooked!! im thinking maybe the bread and i'll put it on the playgym in teh afternoon during our special time...they have a few hours a day on teh play gym near the computer and they take it in turns in having time with me as well as eating millet, ripping paper, playing with balls and general merriment

The awesome thing about the way I cook it is that they all LOVE bread, of couse, and when you bake it that way they have no idea you'e secretly stuffing them with veggies, hee hee hee. If you puree it, there's no oppertunity to pick out the 'gross' bits, or the good bits.
They'll definitely enjoy it during playtime, I think they eat less cautiously when they're out and about because they're in explorer mode.
Mine also turn their noses up at the veggies and rice I spend ages making them, that's why I chuck everything into the bread. The quinoa is a great rice substitute, but I'm sure rice would work just as well. They completely ignored the Veggie Heaven I bought them in fact, they just pooped in it and kicked it everywhere. The girls will all happily eat salads, but anything else is just rubbish to them.
I hope your little guys like it as much as mine do.

You should, I can't stress how easily the veggies go down when it's basically part of the dough... or whatever you call bread mixture.
Thank you so much for turning me on to quinoa, the tiels love it and it's so much faster to cook than rice. They also like it better, which is also a bonus.

the only way my birds (and that is all of them) will eat carrots is if it's in birdy bread - sometimes we have to be sneaky to get them to eat their veggies
They have occasionally ate the tiny baby carrot that was with the carrot tops (when i grew my own, in some very hard dirt and the carrots didn't grow right , but the tops sure did lol )

Ah, the things we do to sneak veggies into our bird's diets :D lol!
