Hi all! I have figured out my new baby is a pied but I'm not sure if its cinn. or normal, and of course I still can't figure out if its a boy or girl. Any guesses?? He/she has alot of yellow, will that change with future molts?
Heres a couple pics:

The whole top of his/her head and crest is very yellow, will the face turn yellow too and blend in later??
Thanks so much!!

Normal pied and WOW that is a ton of yellow I have never seen one with so much yellow , I'm not sure if it'll change with molts or not though
and there is no way to visually sex a Pied. at about 4 months most males start showing they're males by doing male things
Whistling
Beak Banging
Talking
Heart Wings
Girls are normally more quiet and laid back.

Really?? The breeder clipped his wings before I brought him/her home and I could have cried cause they were all a clear pretty yellow with no markings. :( In the clutch there was a latino, a beautiful pearl, 2 normals, and mine.

The face will probably not change. He is pretty well pied and they don't usually change their markings. He is beautiful! His crest is amazing!

I'm going to say Normal Pied. The feathers really do have a charcoal color rather than tan or brown. And judging by the one picture I would guess male.

Wow, so pretty. I'm going to be getting a girl for my Edward and I hoping to find a pretty color like that. So cute.

I'm going to guess female, based on the cheek patches. Usually the male's is a lot brighter orange, but that's NOT always the case. The only true way to tell would be to get a DNA test done.

Cheek patches really don't tell you anything. It's a myth that a female has duller colored cheeks. It comes from the fact that males of most mutations will have a lighter colored mask which makes the orange stand out in contrast. That wouldn't apply to a pied with gray on it's face. You want to look for things like how far apart the feet are when he stands. Males tend to stand with their feet much closer together because of their pelvic bones.

would his age be a factor as he is only 9 weeks old and hasn't had a molt yet?

I would look for male behaviour like beak banging, heart wings ect. Here is a neat link about tiel behaviour http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/behavior.php :)

Thanks for the link, it helped alot.Loved the pics too.
Thanks for all the nice comments guys. He's getting more bonded with me but we still have alittle to go before he'll let me cuddle with him.He did however find out perching on my shoulder is fun cause it takes him all over the house. :)

I'm still new to all this and don't know what is meant by "heart wings". Is this heart wings?

That's the female mating behaviour. The male one is heart wings, and looks like this:

Interesting... in my house that's (the picture with the widespread wings) male "THIS IS MINE AND YOU BETTER LIKE IT" behavior LOL

I always heard that one was when they stood upright, with their wings spread out. we've got two girls though, so I haven't seen it myself. =)

Everybody in my flock does the widespread wings, usually while hanging upside down. Except for Vlad, who falls off the perch every time he tries it.

I have two tiels and they both do the widespread wing thing, usually in the mornings when I open up the cage, but the one in the picture, Squiggles, does it when I tickle her/his back. My other one, Gizmo, also does it but not as much. Squiggles is now about 4 months and is in the process of molting. I think Gizmo is a bit older because s/he is not molting, but I'm not sure.
Here are some pics of them: 1st is Gizmo

and Squiggles:

I have a feeling that they are both females because they are very quiet and only make the "eek eek" noise, and they are not that fond of each other either.
