View Full Version : Lutino Genetics - Sexing Lutino's

I just wanted to asked a question about Lutino Genetics - I have a Hand Tamed Lutino (15 weeks old), which chirps a lot, but isn't as vocal as my as other Male cockatiels, so I thought that it must be a Hen...
But, now I'm wondering if it's a sex linked mutation - perhaps it is a quiet boy...
Tino's (original name I know!! lol) Mother is a Lutino and Father is a Normal (sadly I don't know if he is split for lutino)...
Do you have any thought as to what sex Tino is? Or hints to when I'll be able to sex s/he?
When I clipped Tino's wings, there were feather spots of a darker colour yellow on the flight feathers, but because Tino is so young, this doesn't confirm that Tino is a girl, does it?
Thanks in advance...

Could be both male or female...
In order for you to get a lutino dad would had to carry the gene...
that now makes your lutino boy or girl....as im told lutino is hard to visual sex because both parent carry the gene.....
Someone correct me if im wrong

absolutely right... dad HAD to be split lutino at least for your baby to be lutino... and since mom is visual lutino then it can be boy or girl...
the spots are likely female traits.. but as you said your baby is still young and at that age many males have them as well as tail barring... which should go after molts.... best bet is DNA test or wait.. ;)

For any Lutinos his dad is split to Lutino as well meaning your bird could be either or
and nope right now the spots you saw won't help because he/she is young.
if it is still there when its 6 months then its a good chance its a girl if its not showing any boy traits. by a year old you should know 100% if its male or female. But most do start showing their traits at 4 months (boys are loud, beak bang, heart wings, ) some are slow to show theirs though.

ok takeing in the fact mom is lutino and dad had to be split to lutino this is what the genetic caculator came up with if you want to be sure you will need to do a dna test
Mother:Lutino
Father:Grey Split To {X1: Lutino}
male offspring:
50% Lutino
50% Grey Split To {X2: Lutino}
female offspring:
50% Lutino
50% Grey

Young males usually are quieter than more mature males! So you won't really know for sure for a while.
