Hi everyone. just signed up and will head to the introductions section after this.

My friend had a tiel and he was lovely. whenever i would go round there it was always friendly and sit there chirping and would happily sit next to me while playin the xbox with my friend! recently though he died so i was thinking about getting one of my own! ive had a look at the stickies aswell as some other sites over the last few days deciding how to go about it and this bird seems the right one for me. i have plenty of time to give and am thinking about putting him (or her) in my well ventilated large bedroom (due to dander issues, ive made sure that the cage will be near a well ventilated area with no draughts) Any way, i was wondering how much these birds cost weekly, cost of initial setup and if the experience is usually as rewarding and fun as it was with my friends bird? any advice on how to go about this from a total noob perspective would be appreciated. thanks in advance

Though, if I picked out the right cage for them I will be getting it for them for next christmas since my other birds cage will be the one I have time to save for.

Here is what there current cage looks like:

(and if I got another bird I'd at least have 2 other cages to chose from depending on the one that I end up getting for in the future)

Plus, I figure since my budgies are getting a new cage this xmas next year sometime my tiels will be getting a new cage as well.

I am thinking about getting some materials on cockatiel training so I can start training Sunny to do some tricks. I never really did it because it was never my intention to use him to show off to friends or whatever and I love him the way he is, but now I think differently. I have come to realize that it is a way to reinforce your bond with your tiel and to make his life more fulfilling.

My question is: Can anyone on this forum recommend something to me that they have tried and know is good? I mean, there's so much stuff on the internet, with guys like Mr. Chet Womach and that guy on the www.mybirdtips.com website who has a whole collection of clips on YouTube. Of course, they all claim to work miracles, that your tiel will know tons of tricks within days, will never bite you again, etc. etc. etc. I'm not sure if I'm really convinced. :o So if someone can recommend a website or a book or DVD or whatever, that will be great. :D

I've been in conversation with Susanne about the exact mutations of my most current clutch, but with all the possible splits and likelihood of compound or multiple mutations covering each other, it's really very difficult to say.

HOWEVER, it drives me NUTS not to know, and since there are no genetic tests available to determine for sure what genes a bird holds, I'm asking for as many of you as possible to weigh in with your opinions. If you know of an expert willing to take a look at my birds' photos (for free) PLEASE let me know! Many thanks in advance!

What I do know is this:

Father: Pastelface split Pearl, Pied, Cinnamon, Lutino, Whiteface

Mother: Whiteface Cinnamon Pearl with possibility of being also Single Factor Dominant Silver, but this is unknown.

I have researched, studied, asked people, studied some more, asked more people, etc and to the best of my ability, my guesses will be stated with each baby's picture. Please share your guess, or if you've had contact with other birds of known mutations that look like mine.

Baby 4 in this clutch got jammed up with seed in the nest and wasn't receiving adequate nutrition for a period of a few days in the middle of it's second week, so it's quite a bit less developed than the other 3.

Here we go!

Mom and Dad:

Two Chicks From This Pair's FIRST Clutch:

Current Clutch, Baby #1:
My guess is Pastelface Cinnamon Pearl.
Have to assume the Cinnamon gene and the Pastelface gene have caused the severe washing out of the grey/brown tones giving the baby this very soft look.

The same baby, with it's parents for color comparison's sake. The baby is also clearly split to pied.

Current Clutch, Baby #2:
Clearly, this baby is a Pastelface Lutino. I wonder if it's also Pearl?

Baby #2 with Parents:

Current Clutch, Baby #3:
This is where things get a little interesting. My guess has been that this is a Pastelface Pearl with unknown splits at this point. However, upon closer examination, I see brown in it's crest leading me to suspect Cinnamon. But, if so, why are it's flights and other body feathers so much darker than the first baby?? When I compare this baby to normal Pearls, it's crest is a much more "rusty" color.

Baby #3 with it's parents:

Current Clutch, Baby #4:
This is a Whiteface Pearl with the same issues as Baby #3. It's crest and even it's face feathers are brown, but it's flights and other body feathers are very dark, as they would be in a normal Pearl. Since WF cockatiels have no yellow, the brown has to come from the mutation of the melanin pigment, and therefore the Cinnamon gene. So if this baby and Baby #3 are Cinnamon, what does that make Baby #1?

Baby #4 with it's Mama:

Again, I appreciate all opinions, even if you don't think you know - send along your thoughts! I have to figure this out!! :p

When I received Lenny his wings were pretty much butchered from the previous owner. When he would try to take off flying, he would immediately hit the floor.
Okay, now that his wings have nearly fully grown out, he can fly ALL over my house. This is such a beautiful thing to see, but that is how I lost my last tiel Snickers...he was doing the exact same thing and my son just happened to open the door and he took off :(
I could not bare the thought of losing another one of my babies...even though I have only had him since June, I am very attached to him and so is the rest of my family.
The reason I DO NOT want to cut them is because I feel he enjoys this new since of freedom...he can come to me if he wants me, but that is sometimes not a very good thing, because he comes to me constantly now. I put him on his play gym or in his foraging bowl and if he sees me, forget it, he will practically chase me down.
I try to let one of my tiels be able to fly at all times...I can not have all 4 of them flying around my house...but one at a time, seems to work okay.
I am wondering what you all think...Should I clip his wings or not?
He is gorgeous either way, in my opinion.
Now I do have to say he is getting a little bit nippier with this new found freedom too:(

***PLEASE NOTE***
I AM TALKING ABOUT CLIPPING MY COCKATIELS FLIGHT FEATHERS ONLY, NOT THE ACTUAL WING...NEVER, EVER CUT THE WINGS, IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CLIP FLIGHT FEATHERS...PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIEL TO AN AVIARY VET WHO CAN DO IT FOR YOU...THANK YOU
