I understand that there are hidden genetics in the cockatiels but for the life of me I can't figure out how a Normal Grey Pied female and a pied Lutino can make a cinnamon pearl... Can someone explain this to me... I got her from a breeder and that is what she wrote down for her and the parents.. Here is a pic of her when she was young, and she's now 14 months old and still has all her pearling's so it is safe to assume she's a female? If anyone could help me understand this better I would appreciate it

I think she's grey pearl, not cinnamon. The whiteface chick standing next to her in the first picture looks like cinnamon, and you can see the difference between the grey shades.

You're right, that combination of parents can't produce this bird. All the daughters will be lutino, and they could also be pearl if dad has the gene. But you won't get any non-lutino girls. None of the males will be lutino, but none of them will be pearl either because mom doesn't have the gene.

Something else must have happened here. Maybe mom has a secret lover, or another hen laid an egg in the nest. Or maybe the breeder made a mistake when she wrote down the parents.

The whiteface in the pic is a recessive silver.. He has red eyes.. I emailed the breeder and she is now telling me that the mother of sonny is a normal grey... and not pied... Even still she clearly is not lutino.. She sent me a pic of the male.. I will put it up so you can let me know what he is.. Maybe she is wrong about that too

Dad is pearl pied not lutino, so he is capable of producing this baby after all. Your girl is definitely female. Mom is not pearl but dad is, which means that all their daughters will be pearl but their sons will only be split to pearl.

There's a surprising number of breeders who don't understand the difference between pied and lutino, and think that a bird who's mostly yellow is a lutino. But a mix of grey feathers and yellow feathers is the pied mutation.

She's gorgeous! I still say that she's not cinnamon though, look at how dark the feathers on her wing are.

Thank you.. I don't think she is either after reading up more on it after you said it... So is she considered a pied pearl or a pearl split to pied??
