Default Are there standards for reputable breeders? do they normally supply the genetic histo

I'm in the process of purchasing some recently weaned cockatiel birds from a breeder in Texas and I'm curious, as I have seen many posts regarding the mixing and genetics, etc. Brings up The potential breeding aspects!

There are some beautiful babies that were looking at not for breeding, such as the cinnamon white face pearl, but in the event we wanted to, thus the question below.

My question is : Are there standards or paperwork that exist or is there a standard for breeders like a checklist maybe? Including the history of the breeding mixes or the baby's breeding history, mom, dad etc?

My daughter is getting educated more and more each day for the last six months preparing checklists of all the things not to do and all the things to do and we're trying to just start out small knowing that these birds live a long time, where her concentration is more on the type of bird eating habits best practices etc. mine is on the purchase obviously and what I see is a hot topic on the genetics page here on Tapatalk!

So any standard responses are links or examples would be greatly appreciated and thank you for letting me post!

Not in tiels. There's nothing like the AKC that provides paperwork but that doesn't mean that the breeder themselves can't give you that information. I had one breeder who I purchased from that would band his birds and provide an index card with the parent info and their band numbers for the new owners. It's definitely something to ask the breeder about.

If you buy from a show breeder they will have a pedigree for the bird. How far back the pedigree goes will depend on how long it's been since they added a bird of unknown ancestry to the family tree. Bird breeding doesn't have the type of "purity" standards that pure-bred dogs do, but the show breeders tend to know each other and they like to know whose line they're getting. And the pedigree will give you a good idea of what splits the bird has or may have.

The two major cockatiel societies in the US are the National Cockatiel Society and the American Cockatiel Society. I know that there are several show breeders in Texas. You have to be careful with show breeders however, some of them are honest and some have complaints about them.

Non-show breeders may give you this information too. Everybody who buys one of my chicks gets information on the parents' names and genetics.

If the breeder you get from doesn't have any paper work then ask I'm sure they can at least tell you everything and show you stuff. Breeders are normally happy to help and inform and make sure to take a number for future help and guidance. It's always good to have someone you can call for help. I am in contact with the breeder of one of my hens and we help each other with advice and new things we learn. It makes the hobby even more enjoyable having someone to talk with. Good luck
