Default Bird does not fly - which cage?

Hi

I've just inherited my dad's 27 year old cockatiel who no longer flies.

For the last 5 years he has been walking round my dad's bungalow - before that he was in an aviary.

I bought him a large bird cage and was horrified at how small it was - walking area.

I've now put him in a 1m x .5m guinea pig cage but he cant see straight out as the base is solid. He can see up.

I've been having him out for an hour a day for some exercise but I can't do any better than this as I have two dogs.

Greatful for ideas please.

Oh wow, 27 years is old for a tiel! Is he clipped or is it just that he doesn't fly anymore?
You could check if he still likes to climb around the cage. You could put in platforms and perches he can climb onto, maybe a swing.

My bird is clipped and so he can't fly yet (his feathers are growing out), but he loves climbing around his cage and gets a part of his exercise that way. He loves to play with his bells and anything he can shred. I've hung a pinecone from the ceiling of his cage and he loves to shred it to little pieces!

Best of luck to you and your tiel! Hope you can give him a nice rest of his life

A normal sized cage is fine. Just use a lot of platforms and ladders for easier movability.

Thank you.

Joey hasn't been clipped - he use to fly and was kept in an aviary but he started to lose his tail feathers and could only walk around on the floor in the aviary. The other birds started picking on him, so my dad brought him inside.

I will go to pets at home tomorrow and see if I can buy some ladders.

At the moment Joey cant reach the bars so I don't know if he can climb. He loves sitting on my shoulder - it's pretty obvious he is missing my dad which is sad :-(
