Default Suprise baby Pastle Face????

I paired up a Pastel Face male and a Lutino female, who is very bright in color, and got two babies, one normal and one pastel face lutino which is not possible with this pairing unless the female is split pastel face or the male is dominant yellow cheek??

Picture below, I am really surprised, but unfortunately I don't know the back ground of both birds, so anything can be possible...

Any explanations will be appreciated??

Thanks

Neeraj

You can get pastelface babies from this pair if the hen is split whiteface. Whiteface is a lot more widespread than PF, so a whiteface split is more likely than a pastelface split. PF and WF are different variations of the same gene, and they work together in a way that is different from most other mutations. I have an article explaining it here: http://www.littlefeatheredbuddies.co...d-allelic.html

It is very likely that your male has one PF gene and one WF gene. Breeding PF to WF is considered to be a better practice than breeding PF to PF, so most pastelface birds have one of each gene. If this is the case with your male, then Example 4 in the article applies to your birds. The expected outcome is 50% normal cheeks, 25% pastelface and 25% whiteface.

If your male has two PF genes then Example 2 applies. 50% normal cheeks and 50% pastelface.

It'll be fairly easy to find out how many PF genes he has. Just wait and see whether you get any whiteface babies!

I would say the male it's split to white faced if you look at his yellow face it has a white outline which I read means a high possibility of whitefaced gene (my male also has this white ring and produced a white faced baby)

The so-called signs of a whiteface split are NOT reliable. But in this case there's a high probability that he does have the whiteface gene, simply because most pastelface birds have one PF gene and one WF gene. It's not really a split, but we don't have good terminology for describing what it is.

If he does have the WF gene it looks like he didn't pass it on to this baby, because she apparently got his PF gene instead.

Thanks tielfan,

Yes the male does have a whiteface gene as he got some WF chicks with his earlier mate...

So you will be able to get WF babies from this pair as well as PF and normal cheek.
