Hi everyone I found a cockatiel in a supermarket car park almost 4 yrs ago everyone was walking past it so I picked it and took it home. I advertised it in many places but no one came to claim it so I have taken care of it. Fell in love with it very quickly. It is male and has a ring on his foot that gives year of birth as 1996 so he is 21 now I called him Sam. He eats Nutriberries and Avi cakes but not the fruit or veg ones, he will eat a little lettuce and watercress but that all. He will take millet from my hand but doesn't like to be touched, after all this time I have had him I can touch his toes and he will give me a kiss, I have on a few occasions had to pick him up when he has misjudged a landing and also to clean his bottom as he sat in his poo and during this time told him it's ok and nothing to worry about petted and kissed him but not held him to long as I don't want to scare him off me. He is a timid little man but I dont know how he was cared for before I found him so have been careful not to frighten him. I give him ZoCal-D in his water 1 drop per day I recently got him a UV light that goes over his cage as the weather in the U.K. Is not reliable, he goes outside in cage in sunshine when possible I was told to turn the light on for 4 hours and then off for 1 hour and then back on until 6/7evening. He is at the moment molting and has been a little quiet and subdued which has concerned me a little but he is eating and drinking as normal. I hope that you will all feel free to give me any advice needed to keep my lovely little man healthy and happy. Is it normal for molting time to make him a little subdued and also sleep more?. He has had a vent in his nose that was blocked when I found him but the vet sorted that out and now it is clear.
Sorry for long post but wanted to give as much info as I could.

Thanks GL22

Hey there! Welcome to the forum

Sure sounds like you're taking good care of your little man! It is normal for birds to be a little 'off' during a moult. He may be even a bit cranky. I know my guys get that way

Hope to see more of you! **hugs** and again - welcome to the forum!

Thank you for your welcome to me. Yes Sam is old but can still climb around his cage really well. How long do they live? I hope he stays a long time. He been a little quiet just lately but is molting so maybe that's why. I have been spraying him with AloeVera mixed with water he doesn't mind that. I miss him singing so hope the molting is soon over and he gets back to his usual loud self, he really can be loud especially when I am on the phone.
Thanks for the replies.

That is so cool that you rescued your little 'tiel! I don't think 21 is exceptionally old for a cockatiel; I think there are people on the forum who have birds in their late 20s. Most cockatiels don't live that long, though. My longest-lived cockatiel was a lutino hen. She was 13 when she died of cancer.
Welcome to you and Sam!

What a lovely story. I am sure you are doing your best to keep him happy during his moult. As you can see from my picture below I had Beauty until he was 23. He was never able to fly due to a broken wing so I had him from about 4 or 5 months through several house moves, jobs etc. and he was always a constant in my life. I got him a mate from someone who used to look after him when I was on holiday but he bullied the mate to death through shock. I think he was really selfish in that he didn't want to 'share' me with another bird. There are other birds on here that are around 30, or there were in the past. With no major stresses in his life you should have a good few years at least with him.
